The Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens contains 91 acres (37 hectares) of parkland, gardens, and landscapes that focus on the regional plants, ecology and character of Southwestern New England.
The Arboretum started in 1913, when Dr. Francis A. Bartlett, an eminent dendrologist and founder of the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company, acquired "30 acres [12 hectares] more or less" of North Stamford woodland to use as his residence, training school and research laboratory for his company.
In 1993, the land and overall operation of the Arboretum were transferred to the University of Connecticut at Stamford.

A consummate naturalist, Dr. Bartlett collected waterfowl and minerals, but the hobby that continued throughout his lifetime and into a second century and a fourth generation was his passion for horticulture and his varied collection of trees.
In the 1930s the arboretum became an approved government testing ground; the Department of Agriculture sent plants and trees from all over the world to Belle Plaine to see if they could be grown locally.

Freshly picked wine cap mushrooms were headed to the Stamford home of Leslie Lewis, who, after attending yesterday's tour at the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens, planned to sauté and serve them.
Carol Levine, a volunteer member of the board at Bartlett and a field botany teacher at the New York Botanical Garden who helped lead yesterday's tour, said the arboretum doesn't encourage people to pick plants for consumption because of safety concerns.
Lewis said she often hikes through Bartlett and is familiar with many of the wild plants Brill identified.
