  Bergamo And Bartolommeo Colleoni
Colleoni was by no means deficient in those foxlike qualities which were necessary to save the lion from the toils spread for him by Italian intriguers.
While Colleoni was engaged in pacifying the revolted population of Bologna, the duke yielded to the suggestion of his parasites at Milan, who whispered that the general was becoming dangerously powerful.
It was indeed no slight tribute to Colleoni's reputation for integrity that the jealous republic, which had signified its sense of Carmagnola's untrustworthiness by capital punishment, should have left him so long in the undisturbed disposal of their army.

Bartolomeo Colleoni - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bartolomeo Colleoni (c- 1400 – November 2, 1475) was an Italian condottiere ("soldier of fortune").
Colleoni was born at Solza, in the countryside of Bergamo (Lombardy), where he prepared his magnificent mortuary chapel, the Cappella Colleoni, in a shrine that he seized when it was refused him by the local confraternity, the Consiglio della Misericordia.
Bartolomeo's father Paolo, seized the castle of Trezzo by wile and held it by force, until he was assassinated by his cousins, probably acting on order of Filippo Maria Visconti, duke of Milan.

 Illustrious People
Colleoni fought under Sforza for Venice in 1448, but it was not until the Peace of Lodi in 1454 settled the interminable wars between the Republic and Milan that he was offered the command-in-chief; it was thereafter Venice's chief concern to prevent his going off in search of wars elsewhere.
In part this was through the completion of the superb Cappella Colleoni (Bergamo), designed by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo (it had been begun in 1472), and the erection in it of his elaborate tomb, topped in 1500 by his life-size effigy on horseback in gilded wood.
Colleoni had fought and lived on a grand scale (and had enjoyed the display of his emblem: a set of coglioni - testicles), but if he was the state's benefactor, he was also its servant.

Colleoni made demolished by his soldiers the sacristy of S. Maria Maggiore, in spite of the refuse of the canonical people of the basilica.
A cultured and modern man, Colleoni designed a monument that, placed in the heart of the urban space, would have determined new perspectives (for this reason since 1474 the demolition of the Palazzo della Ragione was established.
Thus, the octagonal tambour of the chapel and the pointed pinnacle of the lantern refer to the fanciful end of the basilica, while the exuberant polychromy of the façade recalls, for the colours and the materials, the portal of the basilica by Giovanni da Campione of the fourteenth-century.

The Cappella Colleoni was built in 1472 when Bartolomeo Colleoni, famous “condottiero” of the Serenissima and Captain of the Venetian army, decided to build his own mausoleum.
Thus, the octagonal tambour of the chapel and the pointed pinnacle of the lantern refer to the fanciful end of the basilica, while the exuberant polychromy of the façade recalls, for the colors and the materials, the portal of the basilica by Giovanni da Campione of the fourteenth-century.
In the interior, the Colleoni monumental grave presents two overlapped sarcophagi inserted in a triumphal arch, a re-elaboration of the monumental gothic graves whose characters, that belong more distinctly to the Renaissance are in any case recognizable in the bas relieves and in the sculptures, a testimony of the extraordinary plastic capacities of Amadeo.
