Barton was elected unopposed to the new Parliament, and his Protectionist Party won enough seats to form a government with the support of the Labor Party.

Russell County adjoins Barton on the north, on the south is Stafford County, on the east a portion of Rice and Ellsworth counties, and on the west a part of Pawnee and Rush counties.
Barton County was, prior to 1872, attached to Ellsworth County for judicial and revenue purposes, but having, in that year, the requisite number of voters, and the population required by law, to entitle it to organization, a petition was presented to the Governor, asking that the county be organized.
Prior to 1870, Barton County was the home of the buffalo, antelope, elk and deer, and for several years after the county began to be settled, these kings of the plain roamed over the prairies of the county in countless numbers.
