Barton County (standard abbreviation: BT) is a county located in the state of Kansas.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $32,176, and the median income for a family was $39,929.

Russell County adjoins Barton on the north, on the south is Stafford County, on the east a portion of Rice and Ellsworth counties, and on the west a part of Pawnee and Rush counties.
As showing the adaptability of the county for farming purposes, it may be stated that the wheat crop of 1877, averaged twenty bushels to the acre sown; in 1878, the average was twenty-three bushels, and in 1882, the average was twenty-six bushels to the acre.
Barton County was, prior to 1872, attached to Ellsworth County for judicial and revenue purposes, but having, in that year, the requisite number of voters, and the population required by law, to entitle it to organization, a petition was presented to the Governor, asking that the county be organized.

Boundaries were changed in 1868 being formed in 1872 from Ellsworth County and remained in that form until 1875 when the county formally became organized.
Barton County was named in honor of Clara Barton, a prominent and beloved nurse of Civil War times.

OF the men who came to Barton County in the early days, at a time when Indians and buffaloes disputed the encroachment of the white man, on what they considered their sole territory, none is better or more favorably known than J. Soderstrom.
His recollections of the early days would make a volume inasmuch as he was here at a time when the development of the county was just beginning and he has seen it grow from almost a barren waste to its present high state of cultivation and standing among the counties of the state.
He came direct to Barton County from Pennsylvania in 1878 at a time when there were very few houses in Great Bend, and the county was not developed to any extent.

He is a son of J. Pascoe, and was one of the first English speaking boys in Barton County.
His father whose biography is found in another part of this book came to Kansas in the spring of 1871 and first located in Russell County where he remained a short time and then returned to Michigan.
