The longer, not so safe and more picturesque route is the Princes Highway which goes via the coast rather then inland.
The road is named after Hamilton Hume, a famous explorer in the early 19th century who in conjunction with William Hovell first found an overland route between Sydney and the infant colonial outpost of Port Phillip, the original name of Melbourne.
The Hume Highway is approximately 900km (550 miles) long, of which over 80 per cent is now dual carriageway or motorway standard.

The report notes that the Monaro, Federal, Barton and Kings Highways all lead into the ACT and have become extremely busy with weekly commuters as well as business and tourist use.
It lists among priorities for the area, completing the Murrumbateman bypass on the Barton Highway, continual upgrading of the Kings Highway and improving overtaking opportunities on the Monaro Highway.
The report comments on the Federal Government's $2.5 billion that will be spent on NSW and ACT roads over the next five years as welcome, but says it falls far short of what is needed.

"In the meantime the Federal Government will consider the need for further improvements on the Barton Highway to improve safety and traffic conditions that may be identified by the RTA," Mr Anderson said.
