Barton was born in Sydney, New South Wales, the ninth child of William Barton, a stockbroker, and Mary Louise Barton.
Barton helped to defuse the situation, and gained much favourable publicity for his efforts, which helped him politically; Barton successfully stood for the New South Wales for the University of Sydney constituency later in the year.
Barton was a strong advocate of the federation of the Australian colonies, and after the death of Sir Henry Parkes he effectively led the federal movement.

Barton was born in the "ole' country" in the village of Hodslavice, Moravia September 26, 1886.
He continued to demonstrate this spirit throughout his ministry, in that on occasions he would resign from established congregations where he was pastor, in favor of younger ministers, so that he could serve others who especially needed his help.
Barton had been given and of his willingness to use them, as was widely recognized and called into service by his peers.

In March 1900 Barton led an Australian delegation to London to assist the passage of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Bill through the British parliament.
Commissioned to form the first Commonwealth government by the Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun, Barton was sworn in as Prime Minister and Minister for External Affairs on 1 January 1901.
Barton served only a single term as Prime Minister, resigning in 1903 to take up an appointment as a Justice of the High Court.

The Rev. John Barton, who was minister from 1832 to 1835 was popular as a man and a leader and "he was a powerful speaker." His vigorous sermons were said never to exceed one half hour and his congregations numbered 300 people, many of them boatmen from the rivers edge.
One of the earliest records of the session, Feb. 5, 1834, during Rev. Barton's ministry, tells of a 3 day hearing of a member, on complaint by his wife that he abused her.
In 1842, under the ministry of Rev. Samuel Hopkins, afterward for 50 years professor of church history at Auburn Seminary, the congregation voted to build a new church on the southside of the river.
