Priabonian Stage, Paleogene Period in Hampshire - Hampshire Museums Service   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the Bartonian stage (formerly known as the Middle Eocene) is represented by approximately 120 metres of sands and clays, collectively known as the Barton Group.
The Bartonian stage is present in the sea cliff at Whitecliff and Alum Bays and underlies the northern part of the Isle of Wight.
The fossil fauna of the Bartonian is dominated by invertebrates, particularly molluscs.

Palaeos Vertebrates 520.150 Cetartiodactyla: Cetacea: Georgiacetus
It is always a pleasure to observe a good job of functional reconstruction done from morphology, but it is particularly useful here.
Georgiacetus is a rather advanced protocetid which lived just before the advent of the basilosaurids later in the Bartonian (the later Middle Eocene).
The basilosaurids arguably represent a departure from the original cetacean body plan, and we would like to know why an anatomical formula which had been successful for 10 or 15 million years suddenly required re-engineering.

The Bartonian Stage is one of the standard stages of the Eocene.
Among planktonic foraminifera, the lowest occurrences of Hantkenina alabamensis, Turborotalia pomeroli, and Guembelitriodes higginsi have generally been associated with the beginning of the Bartonian but detailed correlation with the magnetochronology remains to be completed.
Other biostratigraphic events of a more regional nature associated with the base of the Bartonian include the first appearance of the macroforaminiferal genus Lepidocyclina in the Gulf and Caribbean region and the base of shallow benthic zone SBZ 17 in the Tethyan region.

Abstract: The present study deals with the biozonation of exposed section at Gebel Mishgigah, which is mainly composed of highly fossiliferous limestones, dolostones and marls.
It is of Late Lutetian to Bartonian (Late Middle Eocene) age.
The Mishgigah Member of Wadi Rayan Formation in the Libyan Desert is the stratigraphic equivalent to the Nummulites gizehensis, Buildingstone and Guishi Members of the Mokattam Formation as well as the Bartonian part of the Maadi Formation described by Allam et al.

The Palaeogene coarse-grained clastics of Northern Dalmatia (Jelar breccia, Promina deposits and Flysch) are syntectonic deposits related to the structural evolution of the Dinaride Thrust Belt.
The Jelar breccia is a proximal sedimentary unit deposited in response to early compression of the carbonate platform (Lutetian to Bartonian).
The next tectonic phase (Bartonian to possibly Oligocene) caused folding and thrusting of underlying platform carbonates and tectonic transport, cannibalisation and reworking of the existing Flysch, Early and Late Jelar breccias.

TECTONICS of the PREALPES MEDIANES GEOLOGY
[ii] Since the Bartonian the development of the very low-grade metamorphism is attributed mainly to burial by overriding tectonic nappes during the involvement of the Préalpes Médianes in the accretionary prism after the closure of the Piemont ocean.
These structures have subsequentely been reactivated as tear faults during the main fold and thrust development after the Bartonian.
Finally, during Bartonian to Priabonian the now exotic terrain is incorporated into the accretionary prism of the closing Piemont ocean.

The time span for a single sapropel to accumulate may range between 3 to maximum 20 ky, implying that an insolation-driven change in the atmospheric circulation was most probably the trigger for the changing precipitation pattern in the hinterland.
Comparing the time of siliceous plankton accumulation of the North Atlantic with the Tethys it could be shown that the accumulation of siliceous sediments during Late Thanetian, Late Ypresian, and Late Lutetian to Bartonian was coeval in the North Atlantic and the East European and/or Western Siberian Basins.
This is taken as indication of an intensive water exchange between the Tethys and the Atlantic.

Despite some important intervals without any recovery, it appears that a long episode of strong carbonate dissolution was interrupted during Bartonian times by one or more sporadic and brief events of slight corrosion.
We suggest that the samples were deposited in middle–lower bathyal environments at about 2 ± 1 km water depth, close to the lower limit of an oxygen minimum zone.
