One of the shortest and bloodiest battles of the war was waged at the deep cut of the railroad at Allatoona Pass.
Bartow County is home to Red Top Mountain State Park and Lake Allatoona, which occupy a large portion of the southeast corner of the county.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the population of Bartow County was 76,019 (87.8 percent white, 8.7 percent fl, and 3.3 percent Hispanic).

 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Francis S. Bartow (1816-1861)
After graduating from the University of Georgia, Bartow attended Yale University Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, and then returned to Savannah to read law with John Macpherson Berrien, a U.S. senator and former attorney general of the United States.
Shortly thereafter, Bartow was elected a delegate to the state secession convention in Milledgeville, where as a member of the so-called immediate secessionist faction he used his great oratorical skills to influence the convention to pass an ordinance of secession.
Following the withdrawal of Georgia from the Union in January 1861, Bartow was elected to the Provisional Confederate Congress in Montgomery, Alabama.

Later, the views of Gen. Cass on the issue of slavery caused a change of feeling, and on December 6, 1861, the name of the county was changed to "Bartow" in honor of the "illustrious hero of Manassas," Colonel Francis S. Bartow.
The determination of Bartow County families to rebuild and preserve is also visible in the beautiful gabled Victorian homes of the Post-Reconstruction period.

During The Civil War Bartow County was occupied during the Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and was the place where General Sherman began his March to the Sea.
In the Battle of Allatoona Pass, the largest battle to occur in Bartow County, French surrounded federal general John Corse in a star fort overlooking the pass but was forced to retreat when he received reports of a significant Union force approaching.
To ensure that Georgia did not have the means to rebuild, as Sherman left for Savannah he removed the railroad track from Dalton to Allatoona Pass and destroyed the track south of Allatoona Pass.

I adopted Bartow County as my home (born in Oklahoma) 22 years ago, I have that right as my great grandfather was full Cherokee and was taken from the Auroria Gold Fields in 1838 with his brother and forced by the white man to go west.
By an act of legislature in 1861, the name of the county was changed to Bartow, to honor Francis S. Bartow, born in Savannah in 1816, and died at Manassas, commanding the brigade consisting of the 7th, 8th, and 9th Georgia, and the 1st Kentucky Regiments.
