It is believed that at the time of the Doomsday book Barwick may have been too small to have been mentioned separately and was probably included with Yeovil.
The earliest account of the Manor of Barwick appears to be a survey made in 1277 which describes a typical small medieval estate.
In the village is a 13th century church, and in the surrounding area of Barwick Park are four early 19th century follies, all of which are worth a visit.

The core of the present mansion, known as Barwick House, appears to have been built c 1770 by John and Grace Newman, whose relations owned neighbouring Newton Surmaville (qv).
Bought by South Somerset District Council for a nominal £5 when the estate was sold in the early 1990s, these extraordinary follies are something of a mystery.
They were possibly commissioned by George Messiter of Barwick to mark the park boundaries at the four cardinal points.

The grandson of this extraordinary old gentelman was Thomas Symes, who resided at Barwick, and obtained, 23 Charles II, a Charted for a second fair, to be held on the 17th of September.
As this young man died, unmarried, Barwick, under a family settlement devolved, first,on his cousin, John Symes of Mount Serrat, in the West Indies, and then on to his nephew, Sammuel Parry, who assument thje name Symes.
(Information obtained from "Somerset in the Civil War and Interregnum" by David Underdown.) I only mention John SYMES participation in the English Civil war because I believe it weakened his standing with the King and some of his sons carried on allegiances and opposition to the Royalist point of view.
