  Barwon Heads  - Intown Geelong
Barwon Heads as the name suggests is located on the mouth of Geelong's major river system the Barwon, which stretches through the Geelong region to the Otways.
Until the Barwon Heads bridge was built in 1927 a ferry ran by Tom Abernathy took holiday makers and locals on a trip across the Barwon River from Barwon Heads to Ocean Grove on the east side.
Barwon Heads lies on the western side of the Barwon River, with Ocean Grove being on the eastern Side.

It is a flood-prone region with the McIntyre River falling one foot per mile between Goondiwindi and Mungindi, as it flows in a south-westerly direction.

Local archaeologist,Mrs Louis Lane, writes that the Wathaurong word for the river was 'Barra Warre N Yallok' which meant, in translation, 'the great river which flows from the uplands (or Otways) to the sea'.
Settlement at the mouth of the river began on the Ocean Grove side in 1854, but settlement on the western side, at Barwon Heads, was delayed until 1875.
The river was bridged in 1927 and Barwon Heads, like Ocean Grove before it, became a holiday destination for the people of Geelong.
