New York-based Russian folk dance and musical ensemble Barynya brings its high-energy performance to Penn State Harrisburg at noon Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007.
Barynya — a unique group of soloists, musicians, singers, and dancers — were trained and have performed with the Mooiseev Dance Company, Virsky Ukranian National Dance Company, Ensemble of Black Sea Navy Dancers, and Riverdance.
A highlight is the barynya, an original Russian folk dance with fancy foot stomping and traditional squatwork, sudden knee bending, and frenetic dancing.

BARYNYA was founded in 1991 by Russain accordion player, Mikhail Smirnov, dancer Sasha Anchutin and Russian folk singer, Natalia Demidova.
Over the past 15 years BARYNYA has performed from coast to coast in the United States, at venues that ranged from 10,000 seat auditoriums to elementary school gymnasiums.
The personnel that does the actual performances has changed over the years but Mikhail Smirnov has kept a firm hand on BARYNYA to make sure that every part of a performance is as authentic as possible, hence BARYNYA is one of the few groups that lists a credit for full-time costume designer.
