  USGS Photo Glossary: Basalt
Basalt is erupted at temperatures between 1100 to 1250° C. More about volcanic and plutonic rocks.
Basalt is the most common rock type in the Earth's crust (the outer 10 to 50 km).
Basaltic magma is commonly produced by direct melting of the Earth's mantle, the region of the Earth below the outer crust.

  Basalt - LoveToKnow 1911
Olivine and augite are the commonest porphyritic minerals in basalts, the former green or yellowish (and weathering to green or brown serpentine), the latter pitch-fl.
Basaltic lavas are frequently spongy or pumiceous, especially near their surfaces; and, in course of time, the steam cavities become filled with secondary minerals such as calcite, chlorite and zeolites.
In the vitreous basalts sometimes very few crystallized minerals are observable; the greater part of the rock is a dark brown glassy material, almost opaque even in the thinnest sections, and generally charged with fl grains of magnetite, skeleton crystals of augite or felspar, spherulites, perlitic cracks, cmsteam vesicles.

Basalt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term basalt is at times applied to shallow intrusive rocks with a composition typical of basalt, but rocks of this composition with a phaneritic (coarse) groundmass should generally be referred to as dolerite or gabbro.
The shape, structure and texture of a basalt is diagnostic of the way it erupted and where it erupted - whether into the sea, in an explosive cinder eruption or as creeping pahoehoe lava flows, the classical image of Hawaiian basalt eruptions.
Maar volcanoes are typical of small basalt tuffs, formed by explosive eruption of basalt through the crust, forming an apron of mixed basalt and wall rock breccia and a fan of basalt tuff further out from the volcano.

basalt. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Basaltic magma is derived by partial melting of the peridotite that is found in the asthenosphere which reaches the mid-ocean ridges, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and forms the new oceanic crust, the uppermost layer of the lithosphere.
Basalt dominates the mid-ocean islands and surrounding regions of the Hawaiian Islands and Iceland, as found by samples of lava flows found in drill cores recovered by vessels of the Deep Sea Drilling Project and the now defunct Project Mohole (see Mohole, Project).
Basalt may be compact or vesicular, i.e., porous because of gas bubbles contained in the lava while it is solidifying.

Basalt is a hard, dense, dark volcanic rock composed chiefly of plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine, and often having a glassy appearance.
The name "basalt" is usually given to a wide variety of dark-brown to fl volcanic rocks, which form when molten lava from deep in the earth's crust rises up and solidifies.
Basalt differs from granite in being a fine-grained extrusive rock and having a higher content of Iron and Magnesium.

Basalt fiber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Basalt fiber or fibre is a material made from extremely fine fibers of basalt, which is composed of the minerals plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine.
The manufacture basalt fiber requires the melting of the quarried basalt rock to about 1,400°C. The molten rock is then extruded through small nozzles to produce continuous filaments of basalt fiber.
Since declassification in 1995 basalt fibers have been used in a wider range of civilian applications.

These basalt deposits are a member of the Qatrani Formation and are of late Oligocene age (Siad, 1962) representing basalt surface flows, some of which are up to 25 m in thickness (Beadnell, 1905).
Other deposits of basalt are found at Abu Za'bal, northwest of the Giza pyramids, southwest of Samalut in the Cairo-Suez desert, Aswan, the Baharia desert, and in the Sinai and Eastern desert (Siad, 1962).

 Basalt and Granite
The volcanoes that make basalt are very common, and tend to form long and persistent zones of rifting in nearly all of the ocean basins.
Basalt is commonly very fine grained, and it is nearly impossible to see individual minerals without magnification.
Basaltic crust is dark and thin and heavy, while granite is light and accumulates into continent-sized rafts which bob about like corks in this "sea of basalt." When a continent runs into a piece of seafloor, it's much like a Mac truck running into a Volkswagon.

Basaltic magmas are often very rich in dissolved sulphur, and sulphuric acid aerosols formed from sulphur volatiles (largely SO) are injected into the stratosphere by convective plumes rising above volcanic vents and fissures.
Although the correlation between some flood basalt episodes and extinctions may implicate volcanism in the extinctions, it is also possible that other factors lead to an apparent association.
