Fidra   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The island of Fidra is a thick Permian basanite sill, possibly part of the same intrusion as The Lamb.
This intrusion represents a period of renewed magmatism post-dating the Carboniferous lavas, and is probably contemporaneous with the basanite sheet of the Brigs of Fidra, which cuts the Markle basalt.
Of great interest are the small mafic and ultramafic xenoliths in the basanite, examples of which occur in boulders deposited on the storm beach East of Marine Villa.

INORGANIC ORIGIN IN UPPER MANTLE SEEN LIKELY FOR SOLID HYDROCARBON IN SYRIA PLATEAU BASALT
Lower Pleistocene carbonatite with basanitic, ultrabasic, and alkaline basalt xenoliths, was locally disseminated with and cut by veinlets of a solid hydrocarbon in rifted and plateau basalt covered southern Syria.
The lack of hydrous silicates in basanite, ultrabasic xenoliths and plateau basalt, and the oxidation and hydration of ferrous oxide only in xenolithic peripheral mafic minerals (olivine and pyroxenes), indicated a seepage of meteoric water along the rift and fractures.
The gray-brown to reddish vesicular carbonatite, in the forms of lavas, dikes, and tuffs, was found in six lower Pleistocene scoriaceous basanitic cinder cones, extruding the alkaline plateau basalt, in Jebel el Arab near the border with Jordan (Fig.

The 1949 rift zone eruption along the Cumbre Vieja ridge on La Palma involved three eruptive centers, 3 km spaced apart, and was chemically and mineralogically zoned.
The eruption ended with Duraznero erupting basanite with abundant crustal and mantle xenoliths.
The Cumbre Vieja rift zone differs from the rift zones of Kilauea volcano (Hawaii) in lacking a summit caldera or a summit reservoir feeding the rift system and in being smaller and less active with most of the rift magma solidifying between eruptions.

Basanite intrusions from the Early Cretaceous Erongo complex, Namibia, have compositions consistent with near-primary mantle melts derived from a depth of at least 100 km.
Initial Sr—Nd—Pb isotope ratios of the Erongo basanites and associated tephrites and phonotephrites (87Sr/86Sr = 0·70425—0·70465; Nd = +1·8 to +2·7; 206Pb/204Pb = 18·63—18·91) are independent of the degree of differentiation and correspond closely to an estimated range for the Tristan plume at 130 Ma.
Incompatible trace element ratios also overlap with ratios of ocean island basalt (OIB) from the South Atlantic islands of Tristan da Cunha, Gough and Inaccessible associated with the modern Tristan hotspot.

Journal of the Geological Society: Compositional variation during monogenetic volcano growth and its implications for ...
Each volcano records: (1) intrusion of a basanitic parent magma to lower- to mid-crustal levels and its subsequent fractionation to form a tephritic residual melt; (2) subsequent transection of this reservoir by a second batch of basanitic melt, with tephrite rising to the surface at the head of the propagating basanite dyke.
We conclude that the two studied continental monogenetic volcanic fields demonstrate a consistent history of early magmatic injections that fail to reach the surface, followed by capture and partial eruption of their evolved residues in the course of separate and significantly later injections of basanite that extend to the surface and erupt.
As indicated by Table 2, differentiation of basanite parent magma to tephrite is, however, commonplace in polyphase alkaline volcanoes.

This study aims to quantify dissolution rates as a function of sample geometry by dissolving quartz cylinders and spheres in basanite melt at 0.5 GPa and 1350°C. Dissolution rates depend on the shape and position of the crystal in the capsule.
The dissolution rate of cylinders at the top of the capsule is proportional to the square root of time, thus, dissolution is controlled by diffusion.
To determine if these textures indicate in situ reactions in the mantle or reaction during transport, a series of experiments were performed from 1 atmosphere to 2 GPa and the resulting textures and compositions compared with those observed in nature.

On Lanzarote and La Palma, MORB gabbros occur as xenoliths in Pleistocene and historic basanite scoria cones and lava flows.
The MORB xenoliths are interpreted as fragments of Layers 2 and 3 of the underlying Mesozoic oceanic crust, based on mineral compositions (An-rich plagioclase, Ti- and Al-poor clinopyroxene, ± orthopyroxene ± olivine), depleted major and trace element signatures, and Jurassic ages (ca.
The occurrence of MORB fragments on Lanzarote provides definite evidence that oceanic crust beneath the Canary Island archipelago continues at least as far east as the eastern Canary Islands.

The alkali olivine basalt and basanite from Jingpohu are higher in Fe, Mg, Ca and Ta but lower in K, P, Ni, Zr, Hf, Nb, Rb, Sr, Ba and LREE than alkali olivine basalt and basanite from Wudalianchi.
We suggest that the various alkali basalts from Wudalianchi and Jingpohu areas were derived from a mantle source which had been metasomatized and enriched in incompatible elements with a general characteristic similar to EM I defined by Weaver (1991, Earth Planet.
The La/Ce ratios of Wudalianchi basanites tend to increase with younger ages which may be interpreted as due to the decrease of the degree of partial melting of the metasomatized mantle in the younger lavas.

An experimental investigation of the diffusive infiltration of alkalis into partially molten peridotite: Implications ...
When a silica-undersaturated melt is juxtaposed with partially molten peridotite, alkali elements rapidly diffuse into the peridotite in a process referred to as the diffusive infiltration of alkalis (DIA).
Four types of piston cylinder experiments were performed providing constraints on the DIA process: (1) simple phase relation experiments, (2) melt-melt diffusion couples, (3) experiments examining the reaction between powders of basanite and spinel lherzolite (direct mixture experiments), and (4) diffusive infiltration-reaction couples between basanite and partially molten peridotite.
A time series of direct mixture experiments shows that basanite reacts with lherzolite to reduce the orthopyroxene mode to a constant value within 15 min at 1300°C and 0.9 GPa.

Sr-87/Sr-86 is uniform and low (approximately 0.7030) throughout the EL, suggesting derivation of the basanites from a depleted asthenospheric mantle source, and lack of significant crustal contamination during fractionation of the basanite.
Regular geochemical trends indicate that the EL evolved from the basanites by fractional crystallization.
Major element mass balance calculations and trace element models show that fractionation of 16% olivine, 52% clinopyroxene, 14% Fe-Ti oxides, 11% feldspar, 3% nepheline, and 3% apatite from a basanite parent leaves 23.5% anorthoclase phonolite.

The most mafic A-series leucite basanite, with Mg/(Mg + Fe 0.69, 140 ppm Ni and 620 ppm Cr was probably derived from the primary magma for the series by fractionation of only ~ 5 wt.% olivine.
Alternatively, this magma may represent the end-product of interaction between a low-K basanite magma from a garnet lherzolite source in the asthenosphere and a phlogopite-bearing lherzolite zone in the lower lithosphere.
