Amazingly close-knit for the distances that divide them, this energetic band of egalitarian-minded Sivalingam worshippers trace their roots to Karnataka and further to Saint Basavanna, the rebel founder/saint of this sect.
Founded at the down of history, it was reformed and revitalized by Saint Basavanna who lived from 1150 to 1167.
He rejected caste hierarchy, a multiplicity of Gods, the magico-ritualistic (and allegedly self-aggrandizing) priestcraft, temple worship, duality of God and soul an the idea of ritual purity/pollution and doing charity to win God's special favour.

Basavanna: Where they feed the fire
Basavanna is chiding those who worship the sacred reality and mystical truth, but only so long as it is nice and neat and socially acceptable -- intellectualized and not actually experienced directly.
When the fire of bliss "goes wild" and "burns the house," filling the awareness with itself as the one all-consuming reality, then these casual worshippers become terrified and try to suppress this sacred process.
So Basavanna challenges us to ask ourselves honestly: Do we worship only what is comfortable, a god of our making and under our control, a safely caged notion of the Divine?

Vira Saiva tradition states that Basavanna was a reflective and defiant youth who rejected much of the Saivism practiced in his day, tore off his sacred thread, yajnopavita, at age 16 and fled to Sangama, Karnataka.
This spiritual realization gave rise to the central Vira Saiva belief that the human body is to be revered as a moving temple of the Lord, to be kept in a perpetual state of purity and sublimity.
Thus emerged temple worship, certain traditions of ritual purity, giving gifts to gurus, and the stratification of society, headed up by two large hierarchical orders of jangamas-resulting in the institutionalization of the crucial guru-disciple relationship, which by Vira Saiva precept should be very personal.
