  Bascinet - Biocrawler
The bascinet was a Medieval European open-faced helmet, typically fitted with an aventail and hinged visor.
The bascinet, both with and without a visor (visors were often removable for better visibility and ventilation), was the most common helmet worn in Europe during the latter portions of the 14th and early 15th century, including during the Hundred Years War.
It is theorized that more experienced fighters often wore their bascinets without visors for better visibility during hand-to-hand combat, and to avoid heat exhaustion.

 myArmoury.com: The 14th Century Bascinet
It was attached centrally to the bascinet by means of hooks or studs on the brow of the bascinet, and it was also tied to the aventail.
The weight of a bascinet including its visor from Deutsches Historisches Museum (#35) was recorded at 2.89kg (6.37 lb), with 30cm height, and the skull of another, German one, from the same museum (#32) is recorded at 1.6kg (3.53 lb) and 27cm high.
The bascinet may have reached the height of its development in the Great Bascinet of the 15th century but it also gave rise to the sallet and barbuta, forms of head protection popular in the 15th century.

Arms & Armour Glossary of Terms
Bascinet: The helmet that evolved out of the cervellaire, a small "skull cap" worn under the great helm, by extending the plate down over the neck and cheeks.
Early bascinets had no visors, but by the second quarter of the 14th century they were fitted with Klappvisiers, visors, using a centralized hinge system.
The bascinet itself was popular throughout Europe during the 14th century, showing a great variety of forms within the style.

 Bascinet - Cunnan
The smaller forms of the bascinet could be worn under a great helm, in which case a visor was not worn with the bascinet.
The true bascinet developed in the 14th century and by 1330 had replaced the cervelliere.
Towards the end of the century saw the bascinet cover the base of the neck as well and the apex of the skull moves backward further so that the back of the helmet has an almost straight profile and the front has a smooth curve.

 bascinet
In some of the bascinets of the second quarter of the 14th century there is a triangular piece of mail projecting from the middle of the camail that could be hooked up to the forehead so as to cover most of the face.
The first visors were hinged to the forehead of the helmets but, by the end of the century, they were pivoted at the temples.
Early in the 15th century the camail was replaced by plate neck guards forming the "great" bascinet.

Pigface Bascinet - Medieval Helmets & Armor
This helm style became popular in the late 13th century, quickly replacing the Great Helm because the rounder shape gave the pigface a closer more secure fit.
Towards the late 14th century, the long snouted appearance had earned it the nickname Hounskull, or Pig-face bascinet.
This is an excellent reproduction of the Pigface as it was circa 1390 A.D. It is made of hand-forged 18 gauge, low carbon, A-36 mild steel.

This piece is adapted for use according to the combat rules of a re-enacting club; it has more breath holes and a wider eye-slit than an authentic bascinet of this period would, and a catch has been added to keep the visor closed.
The pins in the hinges can be pulled out to remove the visor (or in the case of this helmet, to replace it with a visor of different form): welded steel chains guard the pins of the hinges from loss.
The bascinet and visor together also weigh about 6 pounds, again bringing them close to the weights of the Churburg examples.

It was found that the helm was cumbersome in the melee, and after the advance or charge it was often abandoned.
By the early 14thC, this had developed into the small, rounded bascinet, and by the 1340's we start to see the poited type of skull shown here.
The bascinet had now replaced the helm in most instances, the helm being reserved for the tournament.

Different types of helms would evolve, as mobility, line of sight and breathing became a necessity, while still having effective protection for the head.
Evolving in the latter part of the 14th century as an effort to solve the cumbersome nature of the Great helm and the lack of protection of the Spangen helm, this helm sported a visor which projected very strongly in a point and was therefore named the "pigface" or "dogface" bascinet.
The full coif of chainmail was shortened to an "aventail" and was suspended from the bottom of the helm to guard the neck.
