Base Station Subsystem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typically a BTS for anything other than a pico cell will have several different transceivers (TRXs) which allow it to serve several different frequencies or even several different cells (in the case of sectorised base station).
The Base Station Subsystem (BSS) is the section of a GSM network which is responsible for transmitting to and receiving radio signals from the mobile phone.
This increases the traffic capacity of the base station (each frequency can carry eight voice channels) whilst not greatly increasing the interference caused to neighboring cells (in any given direction, only a small number of frequencies are being broadcast).

The second transceiver is controlled to provide sole coverage for mobile stations within the outer area 206 from a TA of 63 bits, corresponding to a distance of 69.2 km, to a TA of 1 bit, corresponding to a distance of 35.4 km from the base station 202.
The digital transceivers 116 are used to equalise, deinterleave, demultiplex and channel decode the received TDMA frames 6 and either act on the information contained in the frames or place the information in a format for transmission to a base station controller and then to a mobile switching centre.
A base station as claimed in claim 1, wherein said base station is a GSM station and executes a handover from said first transceiver to said second transceiver for a mobile station travelling from said inner area to said outer area when the timing advance (TA) of said mobile station exceeds a first predetermined value.

Spatial multiplexing is a transmission technology that exploits multiple antennae at both the base transceiver station and at the subscriber units to increase the bit rate in a wireless radio link with no additional power or bandwidth consumption.
Based on the spatial signatures, a signal processing technique is applied to separate the signals thereby recovering the original substreams.

Patent 5430774: Data transmission method and base transceiver station using this method
As soon as the base station begins to transmit it sends a continuous stream of data to the transcoder; this stream must be modified only if the base station clocks drift relative to that of an interface between said base station and a base station controller.
If the mobile station were to begin to transmit at any other time, the base station would not be able to reconstitute from the data received the initial streams of frames as present at the mobile station before interleaving and would therefore be incapable of using the data transmitted.
After a traffic channel designed to convey speech or data is activated for the exchange of data between the base station, and a mobile station the transmission of the first streams of data frames from the mobile station to the base station may give rise to an offset relative to that corresponding to steady-state conditions.

G3 Networks therefore, require a greater number of base stations than traditional cellular networks to be able to provide blanket coverage over the same area.
As the handset moves to another cell, the call is automatically transferred (handed off) to the base station serving the other cell.

 MobileWorld - GSM
The GSM Network comprises three parts, Mobile Station (MS) which is similar to a cordless phone with extra features, the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) that controls the connection with the Mobile Station, the Base Station Controller (BSC) that controls multiply Base Transceiver Station's and then the rest of the network covered further below..
A series of BTS's are connected to each Base Station Controller, the BSC keeps a eye on each call and decides when to pass the call off to another BTS and to which one.
Once the Mobile Station's MSISDN has been used to identify the IMSI, the HLR verifies the subscription records to ensure that the call can be delivered to the last known location of the Mobile Station.

Base Station Transceiver, 3G Wireless Base Stations
As designs for base transceiver stations progress toward 3G and beyond, the flexibility that will be required by evolving standards and by demands on performance, will be achieved by software algorithms and models such as employed in smart antenna arrays, software defined radio, and programs that help overcome multipath effects.
Special operating systems are used to support the communications between various processors and tasks and to ensure that partial failures will not affect the overall functionality of a base station transceiver.

However, if the base transceiver station of the cell entered by the mobile host is connected to a base station controller different from the one servicing its previous cell, then all state information will be transferred to the new base station controller.
No exchange of state information will be needed between base station controllers, if the mobile host moves from one cell to another cell, whose base transceiver station is serviced by the same base station controller which managed the base transceiver station of the previous cell.
The base transceiver station will forward this message to its base station controller, where it will be logged.
