Shot Heard 'Round the World (baseball) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In baseball, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" is the term given to the walk-off home run hit by New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds to win the National League pennant at 3:47 PM EST on October 3, 1951.
The phrase "shot heard 'round the world" is from a classic poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson, originally used to refer to the first clash of the American Revolutionary War and since used to apply to other dramatic moments, military and otherwise.
The same day Thomson hit the Shot Heard 'Round the World, the future baseball Hall-of-Famer Dave Winfield was born in St.

Shot heard 'round the world - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emerson used hyperbole as a rhetorical tool in the phrase "shot heard 'round the world." He wrote Concord Hymn for the dedication of a battle monument very close to his family's home, and the words are meant to emphasize that a critical event happened at this location that triggered something of global importance.
It is often thought that firing the shot was meant to represent the beginning of a struggle for freedom against perceived tyranny, and the hearing represents the worldwide spread of this struggle with the American Revolution serving as an example.
In baseball, it is used for Bobby Thomson's 1951 walk-off home run that clinched the National League pennant for the New York Giants.
