Topic: Baseband modulation

Single-sideband modulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Single-sideband modulation (SSB) is a refinement of the technique of amplitude modulation designed to be more efficient in its use of electrical power and bandwidth.
Standard amplitude modulation produces a modulated output signal that has twice the bandwidth of the baseband signal.
Modulation using this method is again gaining popularity in the homebrew and DSP fields.

Gaussian minimum shift keying - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The baseband modulation is generated by starting with a bitstream 0/1 and a bit-clock giving a timeslice for each bit.
The baseband signal is generated by first transforming the zero/one encoded bits into -1/+1 encoded bits.
The baseband signal is then modulated using frequency modulation, producing a complete GMSK signal.

 GLOSSARY - Baseband ...
The Baseband signal is the band of frequencies representing the original signal either prior to modulation or reconstructed (demodulated) from the modulated signal.
Modulation is a method of modifying a parameter of the carrier as a function of the baseband signal.
The modified parameter is the amplitude for amplitude modulation, frequency for frequency modulation and phase for phase modulation.

Ultrawide-band communication system and method - Patent 5677927
Modulation of the coded timing signal by the subcarrier time modulator generates a modulated, coded timing signal that is sent to an output stage.
The effect of using the cross correlation function for the modulation transfer function is to cause the output of the receiver to be a non-linear function of the amplitude of the input.
Modulation of the coded timing signal 1014 by the subcarrier time modulator 1016 generates a modulated, coded timing signal 1026 that is sent to an output stage 1028.

While baseband modulation has a lowpass characteristic, beginning at or near zero (depending on the exact line code, see also 4.1.1), passband modulation has a bandpass characteristic with the used band situated somewhere in the frequency domain as can also be seen in figure 32.
In general terms passband modulation is convenient in environments with a domination of low frequency noise, while baseband modulation is to be preferred in environments with a domination of high frequency noise [37].
Multicarrier modulation for transmission of digital data is already known for almost 40 years, but until very recently never played a major role in practical implementations, mainly due to its originally considerably higher complexity in comparison with baseband and single carrier modulation schemes [19], [45].

Diversity radio receiver - Patent 5448602
Alternatively, offset transmission diversity for modulating carrier frequencies having a predetermined difference from two or more transmission base stations with the same baseband signal, simultaneously transmitting the modulated signals, and causing one antenna at the reception unit to receive the modulated signals.
when a signal of a modulated signal of binary differential coding is to be delayed and detected, the output from equation (45) or (46) is used in accordance with the necessary detection direction, thereby obtaining diversity-processed demodulated output of the received signal.
When a modulated signal of multivalue differential coding is to be delayed and differentially detected, both outputs from equations (45) and (46) are used to obtain a diversity output.

In the illustrated application of the invention to a.pi./4 DQPSK modulator, the decomposition of the desired output signal into component terms is effected by exploitation of symmetries inherent in the modulation.
4A and 4B are block diagrams of a.pi./4 DQPSK modulator according to the illustrated embodiment of the present invention.
The illustrated.pi./4 DQPSK modulation format uses a Nyquist type of bandpass filter to smooth the phase transition from state to state.

 Easy Fourier Analysis
The frequency domain representation of a Product Modulator or a mixer has a curious quality that instead of producing the products of the input frequencies which is what we really want, it produces sums and differences of the frequencies of the two input signals in both the positive and negative frequency domains.
Modulation index larger that 100% distorts the signal so an envelope detector can not be used to demodulate it any longer.
Use of SSB modulation would cut this in half but SSB is not used for video signals because of the complexity of the SSB receivers.

Direct digital synthesis of precise, stable angle modulated RF signal (US5952895)
The present invention, generally speaking, provides an RF modulator that allows precise, stable phase shifts to be obtained.
The modulator uses a PLL structure including an auxiliary feedforward path used to inject a baseband modulation signal into the PLL at a point past a loop filter of the PLL.
A resulting error signal is used to control injection of the baseband modulation signal into the PLL, to automatically achieve the correct "dosage." A precise, adaptive, phase-stable modulator results.

The HP 8780A vector signal generator is a synthesized IF source with exceptional modulation for modern receiver and component testing.
It is capable of modulation bandwidths almost 100 times wider than previous HP synthesizers and has a built-in digital baseband to simplify generation of common digital modulations.
Its extra-wide modulation bandwidth comes from a vector modulator that effectively doubles baseband modulation bandwidths for 700 MHz of output modulation.
