Baseboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A baseboard or skirting board or skirting is a wooden board, normally three inches to 11 inches (75–300 mm) high, covering the lowest part of an interior wall.
Plastic baseboard is usually available in white or a flexible version in several colors and is generally glued to the wall.
Baseboards are sometimes referred to as mop boards, cove molding, or floor molding, as well as base molding.

Baseboard Heaters - Cornhusker Public Power District
Baseboard heaters have a central heating core that simply heats the cooler air at floor level and allows the lighter, warmed air to move upward into the room.
Hydronic baseboard heaters have a heating element which is immersed in a heat-transfer fluid sealed inside a copper tube.
Baseboard heaters are the ideal supplement to the central heating system if you want to keep one room slightly warmer than the others.

 Baseboard Installation made easy
Selecting the right baseboard for the home is often a demanding task for the homeowner.  However, one train of thought is to use wider baseboards for a home with antique furniture and hardwood flooring, whereas use narrow baseboards for a contemporary type home.
Prior to installing the baseboard, one rule of thumb for consideration is the nailing pattern of the baseboards onto the wall.  Since the wall studs are framed at 16 inches on centres, cut the baseboards to the longest length that matches the 16 increments of that length.
Baseboards are cut with a backsaw and a mitre box, but more and more homeowners are using power mitre saws to do the job.  However the power saw's performance is limited when the final cut of the cope joint is required.  Nevertheless, the other joint cuts are measured and cut with less effort.

 Baseboard Heating
Baseboard heaters, as the name implies, are installed where the wall intersects the floor.
Not requiring ducts, motors, or fans, they operate by drawing natural convective air currents from the floor (where the air is cooler) across an electric element (some models have liquid-filled elements) with several fins.
Typically, an inexpensive bi-metal coil spring thermostat is used to operate baseboard heaters.

Baseboard introduces convected and radiant heat at floor level, does not create drafts that cool your skin and avoids excessive, wasteful stratification of air (hot near the ceiling, cold at your feet).
Baseboard is also easy to zone so you can vary the heat level from one space to another and choose not to heat unused rooms.
Baseboard radiators are mounted on the wall but the bottoms of the front panels have adequate clearance for carpeting to fit underneath.

Electric baseboard heaters have long been popular among builders because they cost less and are easier to install than furnaces.
Baseboards have customarily been located under windows in order to improve the distribution of the heat into the room.
Moreover, in many rooms the wall area under a window is the perfect spot against which to put a sofa or other piece of furniture thus blocking the flow of warm air.

 How to Install Baseboard Trim
Baseboard trim covers the joints between the walls and the floor and adds an essential finishing touch to a room.
Baseboard is usually finished with a gloss or semi-gloss paint or varnish, so the lines separating the baseboard from the wall and the shoe molding, and the shoe molding from the floor, must not be crossed with the finishing material.
Shoe molding typically is attached to the baseboard, although with hardwood floors, some prefer to attach it to the floor to avoid having gaps open up later between the molding and the floor.

Re: Baseboard Molding Transition :: Builders Websource®
If the differential height is a small fraction of the baseboard height (such as 1/2" for a 6" baseboard molding), you can trim (rip) the bottom of the baseboard molding on a table saw to accommodate the differential height.
However, this means that all the baseboard moldings in your living room (and any directly adjoining room with no doors) will also require ripping to maintain a constant level.
Alternatively, you can run the baseboard molding across the transition, leaving a 1/2" to 3"/4 gab in your kitchen (where the floor is lower).
