  Basehead
Basehead is an alternative hip hop group headed by Michael Ivey[?], a native of Maryland, United States.
He debuted with Plays With Toys[?] (1992, 1992 in music), which became a critical success and college radio hit.
Basehead's latest is an album called Faith, from 1996 (see 1996 in music).

Basehead - Biography - AOL Music
Basehead is the creation of Michael Ivey, a middle-class suburban kid from Maryland.
Ivey recorded the bulk of Basehead's 1992 debut, Plays With Toys, on a four-track at home with various friends.
Ivey assembled a touring band and used them on parts of Basehead's 1993 follow-up, Not in Kansas Anymore.

Untitled Document   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Heralded as either hip-hop visionaries or slacker wiseguys, Basehead were one of the most acclaimed bands to emerge from the burgeoning new rap scene.
Basehead were so far ahead of the curve that seven years after their debut we still can barely see where Michael Ivey was coming from.
But Basehead fell through the marketing cracks and the same thing is probably going to happen to Lazy K, a project formed by Basehead guitarist Keith Lofton, and L.A. hip-hop crew Jurassic 5, both of whom have deserving albums on small indie labels.

 TrouserPress.com :: Basehead
Ivey brings amazing imagination to bear on the task of filling a record with engrossing music: the surreal sonic experience integrates songs with settings that repeatedly upend the musician's usual role in making a record.
While that makes for a rambly, disjointed album that is more energetic and less engaging than prior Basehead releases, Ivey does make sure to get some pointed ideas across.
Using a telephoned invitation to a B.Y.O.B. "party in your mind" as a schematic catalyst, the sprawling tracks articulately excoriate role-playing-in the pretense of gangsta rap ("Change It"), political correctness, the acceptance of crack and guns, fake celebrations of freedom and the predictable patterns of sexual and racial behavior.

Basehead : Faith - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
In a bizarre turn of events, Basehead's Michael Ivey abandoned slacker suburban life for mystical, spiritual territory on his third album, Faith.
Unfortunately, you don't listen to Basehead to hear direction -- Ivey's charm has always been in his fragmented, hazy cut-and-paste approach.
Though he comes up with some fine results on Faith -- and it has to be seen as a comeback after the rote Not in Kansas Anymore -- the album doesn't quite reach its lofty goals.

 Queer in Your Ear 44
The fact that Gibbons manages to unite that dysphasia with a hummable pop refrain in "Sour Times," the hit single that's taking over the whole fucking world at the moment, is at least a modest achievement.
Basehead is actually just one person, Michael Ivey, a guy from D.C. with the most enticing minimalist anti-rap rap on the planet.
Slow-cadence, softly-articulated rap may have put the (Digable) Planets on the map, but they're hyped on caffeine and jacked into 10,000 volts compared to Ivey, who does the closest thing to verbal shuffling of which human beings are capable.

The freaky brainchild of Michael Ivey, Basehead's music is deep semiotics disguised as slacker hip-hop.
Thing is, this CD is a decade old, and every time I hear it, I am left thinking that it is still fresher than most of the music being released today.
Basehead is a hip hop band that always avoided the cliches.

On one of these tapes, buried between all the gangsta rants, was a group I'd never heard of named Basehead.
His beautiful lead vocals are sexy and funny even though his lyrics are about being drunk, depressed, and obsessed with unrequited love.
We're still friends, and Basehead's second release, Not in Kansas Anymore, is just as original and clever as the first one is, but once again, nobody seemed to buy it.

On his fifth album as Basehead and third album as a Christian, Michael Ivey swings away from the hermetic, electronic landscapes of 1998's In the Name of Jesus, but not his simultaneously insistent and vague system of belief.
He didn't leave behind his trademark amalgam of funk, hip-hop, and kitschy pop but he has become more focused.

Basehead : Play With Toys - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Basehead mastermind Michael Ivey's debut album, almost literally a bedroom music project with a friend or two helping out here and there, plays like one long, stoned recording session where songs and subjects seemed to be inspired by the clutter around him (one of the best cuts here is called "Ode to My Favorite Beer").
Combining hip-hop beats, sluggish folk styles and a pop acumen that coalesced into a generational statement of sorts, Play With Toys is an ambitious undertaking, despite its attempts to be otherwise.
