As a big fan of Basement Jaxx and owner of their previous outings, i was puzzled when listening to previews why they depart from a formula that has worked them so well in the past.
Basement Jaxx is a duo I've always admired, but I never thought they totally deserved all the praise the press lavishes upon them.
However, being in familiar territory with Basement Jaxx is never a bad thing, it's dance music pure and simple (also see Daft Punk, Chemical Bros); the whole point of it is to get your moving (waving your hands in the air like you just don't care), and it achieves this with little effort.

Arriving at 8:30, we discovered that local boys Basement Jaxx were not due on stage until 10:45 - an unprecedented line-up of DJs, including Soul II Soul's Jazzie B and, in between his two sets, Wookie, were scheduled to entertain an audience that was as mixed as it was up for a dance.
Having never before been to a Basement Jaxx Rooty - their own Brixton club-night-in-a-pub from which the new album derives its name - I was unsure if this level of musicianship was to be expected or not, but, being used to one or at the most two support acts, I was pleasantly surprised.

But rather than make an album studded with the hottest vocalists of the day and aimed at the pop stratosphere, the Jaxx stuck to their guns and did their own thing.

Underground Sound: Basement Jaxx 'Jump N' Shout' with pure rapture on their exotic new album.
When the late-'80s/early-'90s promise of e-fueled dance-floor communion soured, the willful infantilism of rave music and the prefab soul of mainstream house started seeming either cheesy or perverse, and drum 'n' bass, with all its dystopian and military iconography, appeared to be the most honest music of the decade.
As the Basement Jaxx show, though, rapture can be just as real as rupture.
