Samar, formerly Western Samar, is a province of the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region.
Bordering the province to the north is Northern Samar and to the east is Eastern Samar.
Samar is connected to Leyte via the San Juanico Bridge, which spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the country.

It is composed of six provinces namely: Samar (25 towns with Catbalogan as capital), Northern Samar (24 towns with Catarman as capital), Leyte (41 towns with Tacloban as the capital), Southern Leyte (18 towns with Maasin as the capital) and Biliran (8 towns with Naval as the capital).
Third is Northern Samar with 454,195 with a population density of 129.8 p/sq.km.
Fourth is Eastern Samar with a population of 362,324 and a density of 83.5 p/sq.km.

Tacloban is located on Cancabato Bay, in the San Juanico Strait which divides the islands of Leyte and Samar.
The longest bridge in the Philippines connects Tacloban to the third largest island of the Philippines, Samar.
A day before the festival is held, a ceremony is conducted wherein the image housed in the church is exchanged with that of the image of the Child Jesus belonging to the coastal municipality of Basey, Samar in a fluvial procession.

For over a decade now, the people of Basey have been celebrating the Banigan-Kawayan Festival not only to add color to the festivities in honor of their patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel, but also as a reminder that the woven mat or "banig" and "kawayan" or bamboo have been part of their lives.
So proud are the "Basaynons" or Basey residents of their "banig" that, during the Banigan-Kawayan Festival in 2000, hundreds of residents lined up along the main streets of the town proper, carrying woven mats placed next to one another.
