Assad was forced to pull his forces out of Lebanon in 2005, after the assassination of Lebanese former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, amid speculation that Syria may have been involved in his death, though this has not been confirmed, and Assad strongly denies it.
Bashar entered the military academy at Homs, north of Damascus, following the death of Basil, and was propelled through the ranks to become a colonel in January 1999.
