Although Tory leader Michael Howard initially supported Khanbhai, who was seeking re-election as an MEP in the Euro elections on June 10, it became apparent the game was up for him when the British media started describing him as “Tanzania born”.
Khanbhai, however, appealed to the Full Committee on Candidates, which agreed with the original panel in concluding that Khanbhai should have shown “more diligence”.
Khanbhai, 58, married with one son, who lives in Sevenoaks, Kent, qualified as a pharmacist before reading philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford’s Balliol College.

Mr Howard said Bashir Khanbhai would remain third on a list of seven Conservative candidates for seats in the Eastern region in the forthcoming European parliamentary elections.
A Conservative party committee had earlier concluded that Mr Khanbhai's "disregard for [the] rules and the correct procedure for claiming allowances fell below the standard expected of a member of the European parliament".
The panel met on April 14 and recommended that Mr Khanbhai should be removed form the approved list of candidates for the imminent elections.

The motion, co-sponsored by West Midlands MEP Philip Bushill-Matthews and Bashir Khanbhai, the first Muslim member of the European Parliament called for Europe-wide acceptance of people of all faiths and their right to individually express their beliefs in a way that does not cause harm to others.
