Munir Bashir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Munir Bashir was born in Mosul, situated in northern Iraq.
Bashir always had an ambivalent relationship to his country: On the one side he felt deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Mesopotamia, on the other side the Iraq had no phases of inner stability during the musicians lifetime.
Bashir's virtuosity of picking can easily be understood, when he shows his ability to apply the abovementioned scordatura, with its string pairs tuned in octaves, in an improvisation in the fast 10/8 metre, without the immense stopping problems of this method becoming hearable.

Bashir presented a solo recital of music for the oud, the Arab ancestor to the western lute (al-'oud), in memory of his father Munir Bashir (1930-1997), one of the Arab world's most renowned oud players.
The elder Bashir's music can be compared to that of Duke Ellington in that, although it is musically "set in stone" as it were, the effect is still of free improvisation.
Nevertheless, with all Munir Bashir's compositions, especially the two on the second half of the program, Al-Amira al-Andalusia (The Princess of Andalusia) and Seville, there was the clear Spanish Flamenco aura, as well as the presence of western-type folk tunes and structure in the first.

 Traditions and modernities in Aden
Customs and Traditions live even today in such institutions as the partiarchal family, the idea of the man as the sole breadwinner and the woman secluded from other social networks except what is considered proper from the point of view of her namus, 'sexual honour'.
She describes what she calls an indigenous tradition of 'feminism' in the Arabian peninsula, a tradition of enabling even illiterate women not exposed to Western thought 'to show an awareness of patriarchy and its oppressions and even of Islam as being for the most part an ideology developed to control women' (1982:167).
In Bashir's case a tradition/modern perspective would have led to a moral conclusion on the discrepancy between his ideals and actual deeds, an outcome that would hardly have helped to understand his agency in the context where he himself saw it.

The Scotsman - UK - Revealing encounters with the man behind the mask
MARTIN Bashir went in search of Peter Pan and encountered the Elephant Man. Living With Michael Jackson was, in the best traditions of car-crash television, a thrilling spectacle which produced heat, sickness, and flickerings of blue light.
Bashir’s documentary was good on the claustrophobia of fame, but it was a trap within a trap.
Bashir’s revelations were nothing compared to those on his Dianagram, and weak even when compared with Jackson’s previous calls home.
