It is odd that Basic Blues Magoos (1968) didn't join the Blues Magoos' earlier long-players on the charts, as it was arguably their most cohesive effort to date.
Basic Blues Magoos was a communal effort recorded in their Bronx, New York residence, which was once occupied by Gram Parsons.
Shady maneuvering resulted in the name Blues Magoos being retained by their management and a new incarnation resurfaced in 1969 with only Emil "Peppy" Thielheim in tow.

The next single by the Blues Magoos, "There's A Chance We Can Make It," was only a minor hit, with its b-side "Pipe Dream" actually charting higher (though neither side hit the top 40).
The band was signed to ABC Records, but most of the members did not go along with this plan.

With this impetus, the band used all the trappings of marketable psychedelia to promote their second album, Psychedelic Lollipop [+], which, despite the title's obvious pandering, was a fairly cool chunk of psych-garage rock.
But as the psychedelic era gave way to the hippie era's extended raga-rock proclivities, by 1969, the Magoos seemed anachronistic.
The original Magoos split up in 1969, but Thielheim couldn't resist beating a dead horse and led a mediocre blues-rock version of the band into 1972.

The story of The Blues Magoos' career is much like a gunshot--starting off with a piercing, arresting explosion, followed by a few reverberating echoes, and then silence.
Their third album, Basic Blues Magoos, was their last for Mercury and the last by the original lineup of the group.
When all's said and done, though the music on Basic Blues Magoos may not be as easily accessible as their earlier material, it does include some interesting, creative pieces.

Julian Cope Presents Head Heritage | Unsung | The Book of Seth | The Blues Magoos - Basic Blues Magoos
“Basic Blues Magoos” would be The Blues Magoos’ third and final album for Mercury and it found their former psychedelic snot appeal abandoned for a brand new look and a whole new sound, as mirrored by the toned down, “serious” sepia coloured photography on the sleeve art.
Their producer Bob Wyld was only responsible for four of the tracks on the album, with the rest produced by the band themselves, which doesn’t explain why the entire album sounds ultra-compressed and sonically flat as a pancake as though emanating out from under the oppressive weight of too many quilts.
There is a retarded guitar and cymbal workout in the bridge that is both uncoordinated and cluttered but effective in lightening up the proceedings by doing so.

With a snotty lead vocal from keyboardist Ralph Scala and some wild-eyed guitar playing courtesy of then-16-year-old Emil "Peppy" Thielheim, America made the Magoos' debut single a Top Ten hit, sending it to number five in January 1967.
With this impetus, the band used all the trappings of marketable psychedelia to promote their second album, Psychedelic Lollipop, which, despite the title's obvious pandering, was a fairly cool chunk of psych-garage rock.
Amazingly, they released a third album, with an equally absurd title, Electric Comic Book, that wasn't nearly as bad as it sounds.

 Detroit area rock 'n' roll bands/musicians 1966 - 1972
After a couple of 'this ain't gonna work' ventures following the demise of the Del-Tino's, Cub Koda (along with Mike Lutz from the Talismen) put together one of the definitive bands of the early seventies (and the one which turned him into a Detroit area legend) when he formed the Brownsville Station in early 1969.
The Station ran a smash-and-grab path through the blues, boogie, and fifties-era rock then dumped it all out in a completely modern interpretation, reverent to the spirit of the originals but cranked through Marshall stacks on '10' and powerful enough for the big stages of the era.
With their reputation growing as the hardest working stage show in Michigan, they gigged steadily around the Great Lakes for the next couple of years until they grabbed their moment in the national spotlight with the hit record "Smokin' in the Boys Room" in 1973.

Nowhere is that more evident than the cover of the Move`s "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" or the similarly spirited original light psych opener "Sybil Green (Of the In Between)" and the propulsive "There She Goes.".
Sadly, Basic Blues Magoos failed to join their earlier LPs on the charts, as it is debatably their most solid effort.
