 Naunton Wayne | Biography (1901-1970)
Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne, two affable, upper-crust British actors who so tickled the public's fancy as cricket-loving Englishmen abroad that they made several more appearances together in some very popular comedies, and provided light relief in other films.
Wayne was actually born in Wales, and Radford across the border in Chester.
Both Wayne and Radford proved to have a delightfully droll way of delivering inconsequential dialogue amusingly irrelevant to the events going on around them, and they swiftly developed a marvellous rapport.

That the end result is as cohesive and flows as naturally as it does is a testament to the strengths of all its directors.
Basil Dearden handled the wraparound segments dealing with the gathering at the manor.
The final four minutes of the film, an unbearably chilling whirlpool of madness, is a tour de force depiction of the man's nightmare.

The Films of Petula Clark - White Corridors
Barry Jones, the chief medico, makes a wqrm,, vigorous contribution to the story, while Petula Clark, as a probationary nurse, reveals what the horrors of a surgical ward might mean to a teenager.
It's left to Basil Radford as a guest artist to provide most of the few humorous touches, and to Moira Lister to fill an unrelieved role as the nurse who is discarded by a young doctor, Jack Watling.
While it may sound like a hokey soap opera, it is actually a well-made British A-feature, realistically played by a large and excellent cast that includes a number of well-known faces, among them Petula Clark, Moira Lister, Jack Watling, Basil Radford, and, for the eagle-eyed, Patrick Troughton in a bit part.

Radford and Wayne continued to play these roles (or facsimiles thereof) in such films as Night Train (1940), Crooks Tour (1941), Next of Kin (1942), Millions Like Us (1945), and Dead of Night (1945).
Basil Radford died of a heart attack at age 55, shortly after co-starring in White Corridors (1951).

Basil Radford was famous for the series of silly asses he played with Naunton Wayne in films such as The Lady Vanishes (1938, Alfred Hitchcock) and Dead of Night (1945, the golfing story, directed by Charles Crichton), but in the same year as Whisky Galore!
Waggett is the role of his career, and both Radford and Mackendrick skilfully manoeuvre the character from the caricature of a laird lording over the natives to something almost – mind, I say almost – resembling a tragic hero.
He is in the tradition of such Mackendrickian anti-heroes as Sidney Stratton in The Man in the White Suit (1951) and Professor Marcus in The Ladykillers (1955), each of whom is foiled by faulty planning, communal hostility, adverse circumstances and an unfounded sense of their own self-worth.

The headlong plot tosses the characters back and forth across the continent so rapidly the actors have little room to breath life into their roles, and director Carol Reed lacks Hitchcock's deftness and light touch, but Harrison's cocky, effusive charm helps enormously.
Furthermore, Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford recreated their delightful characters Charters and Caldicott, two British twits who nearly stole the show in THE LADY VANISHES.
If you are particularly devoted fans of Radford & Wayne, Harrison, and/or Lockwood you may be interested in seeing this film, but otherwise you'd be better off just watching "The Lady Vanishes" again---or "Strangers on a Train" if you want suspense along rails.

Them was another film, too, a funny number called It's Not Cricket, in which, as Bright and Early, the priceless pair are prime eyes dogged by a lunatic Nazi on cases that end, appropriately, with a cricket match - in which the ball contains a stolen diamond.
These most popular wearers of the old school tie were half-way through their 1952 radio adventure, Rogues' Gallery, when Radford collapsed and died from a heart attack.

Made by the same British studio that turned out Lady Vanishes, the film also has the same general subject matter, the same screenplay writers, Margaret Lockwood in the femme lead, and even makes similar use of Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne as two tourist Englishmen with a ludicrous interest in cricket.
Lockwood is an appealing heroine and her performance is direct and persuasive.
Rex Harrison is properly suave as the ubiquitous British operative, while Paul Henreid is rightly cold as the treacherous Gestapo agent, Radford and Wayne repeat their goofy Britisher performances of Lady Vanishes and again click.

Bennett displays courage and fast-thinking, as he engineers their escape with help from two English train passengers (Basil Radford, Naunton Wayne).
