The Basilica Aemilia was first built in 179 BCE by the censors M. Aemilius Lepidus and M. Fulvius Nobilior.
After the destruction of the basilica in 410 CE the portico was replaced by a much denser colonnade.
A plaster cast of a frieze from the basilica have been mounted on a wall on the NE side (the original is in the Antiquarium).

Aemilia) was the nomen of the gens Aemilia, one of the five most important patrician families (gentes maiores) of ancient Rome.
The Aemilii were a very old clan; they were supposed to have descended from Mamercus, a son of Pythagoras who was surnamed "Aemylos" or "Aimilios" because of his refinement and speaking ability.
The family lent its name to both the road Via Aemilia and the much later Via Aemilia Scauri, and the Basilica Aemilia in Rome.

The forum was usually square or rectangular in shape and had, among other buildings, a basilica with shops, the public treasury, the curia, and a prison; under Greek influence colonnades were introduced.
Along the southwest side of the Forum was the Basilica Julia, and along its northeast side were the Basilica Aemilia and the curia, where the senate met.
The Forum was closed to the northwest by the Arch of Septimius Severus and by the rostra (platforms adorned with beaks of captured vessels), from which tribunes, consuls, and orators made their speeches.

Its original name was Basilica Paulli, after Aemilius Paullus who rebuilded the basilica in the second half of the first century B.C..

The lower level of the basilica and tabernae were preserved at levels ranging from six inches to five feet above the floor level.

At the eastern end of the Basilica Aemilia is the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the columns of which are barely discernible from the Rostra (but which is represented in Gordian's sketch).
Looming behind both is the edifice of the Basilica of Maxentius (originally called the Basilica Nova).
The foundation of the Basilica Julia and the eight-columned portico of the Temple of Saturn will remain, as will the three corner columns and decorated frieze of the Temple of Vespasian, and the thick lower walls of the Tabularium.
