  Basilica Palladiana, Vicenza
On the southeast side of the Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza stands the Basilica Palladiana (1549-1614), Palladio's masterpiece, with open colonnades of two storys (lower part Doric and upper part Ionic), a very impressive combination.
The basilica was not built as a church but as a meeting-place for the Grand Council.
In front of the west end of the basilica is a marble statue of Palladio (1859).

The Basilica was well known as a resort for the nobility, a covered piazza, common to everyone, with meetings of the Maggior Consiglio, the celebration of San Vincenzo's day, adn even with a temporary theatre (by Palladio's design) with plays of the Accademica Olimpica.
The Basilica was surrounded on all four sides by piazze, each with distinct functions (like charity bank and city residence) laid down as far as marketing went in those days in byelaws (citylaws).
The Piazza, together with the Basilica served for many functions, and was one of the most important place in the city at the time of Palladio.

The contract to build the Loggia, the exterior part of the Basilica, was won by Palladio in competition with distinguished architects of the time, and his plans were not only to support the existing 15th century unstable Gothic building inside his elegant but strongly built Basilica, but also to include the "Domus comestabilis".
It was designed by Palladio as the official residence of the Capitanio, a military authority instituted by the Venetian government.
Basilica as defined by Palladio himself means a court as known in Roman times, and the influence his visits to Rome had on the young architect are obvious in the regular arches and spaces so reminiscent of the Colosseum.
