"Major Basilica" are inseparable words as they reference a specific type of basilica.
That establishes precedence to move this article to the proper title, "Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore" with a redirect from its more uncommonly used English translation.

Our first stop was at the Basilica di San Francesco, the first and most elaborate of the Franciscan churches.
It is rather ironic because the ornate interior of the church, covered with frescoes (and lots of blue paint made from rare and expensive lapis lazuli) contradicts the vow of poverty prescribed by Franciscan teaching.
Probably one of the most interesting aspects of the church is the body of Saint Clare, apparently very well preserved when it was originally found almost 400 years after her death.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Mosaics
Sectile in marbles is found in Santa Sabina, Rome (425-450), in the baptistery of the cathedral, Ravenna; in San Vitale Ravenna (sixth century); at Parenzo (sixth century); in Sancta Sophia at Constantinople and at Thessalonica (sixth century); its use thus has been continuous ever since, and was an especial feature of the Renaissance.
In Florence the mosaics of the baptistery commenced in 1225 by Jacobus, a Franciscan, were continued at the end of the century by Andrea Tafi, Gaddo Gaddi, Apollonio, and afterwards by Agnolo Gaddi.
In the first half of the seventeenth century the painting and frescoes of the basilica began to be imitated in mosaic.

Everyone in Florence knows Piazzale Michelangelo, but not many have explored the hill of San Miniato, with its peaceful winding lanes that climb up as far as the Church of San Salvatore al Monte and Fort Belvedere, which the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici built as a defence for the city.
We will start our walk from the Gate of San Miniato, climb up to Piazzale Michelangelo to explore the area around the monumental buildings of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte and then go back down the hill to reach the Tower of San Niccolò, which gives onto a splendid panoramic view.
This is a short but extremely interesting walk that will take us past monuments famous for their art, as well as places that have played a vital part in the history of Florence, and will also show us many of the suggestive and little known aspects of the hill of San Miniato.

The massive contribution it has made to Western civilisation and culture is out of all proportion to its diminutive size.
