The church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari was completed in 1446 and replaced a smaller church which formerly stood on the same site.
The church is in the San Polo district and is to be found in the Campo dei Frari, a small square nestled amidst a jumble of alleyways, approximately three hundred metres from the San Tomà vaporetti stop on the Grand Canal.
The Frari is open to the public from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 1pm to 6pm on Sundays and public holidays.

The fathers expanded the the convent at various times with the help of the faithful, and after 1250 they built a magnificent church called St. Mary the Glorious (later called the “Frari” from a corruption of Frati due to the numerous religious community that it housed) to a design by Nicolò da Pisa.
It seems to have been rebuilt into its present form in the 15th century, and it is certain that it was consecrated in 1492 by Pietro di Trani, the Bishop of Telesino.
