Basiliscus basiliscus or basilisk is a lizard living in Central America.
It has the remarkable ability of being able to walk on the surface of water.
They, along with the Brown basilisk, have the nickname "Jesus Christ Lizard" or "Jesus Lizard" because when fleeing from a predator, they are very fast and can even run on top of the water.

LIZARD - LoveToKnow Article on LIZARD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Lizards are reptiles which have a transverse external anal opening (instead of a longitudinal slit as in Cro~odilians and tortoises) and which have the right and left halves of the mandibles connected by a sutural symphysis.
The lizards and snakes are the two dominant reptilian orders which are still on the increase in species, though certainly not in size.
In the genus Tejus the teeth of the adult become molar-like; and in Dracaena they are transformed into large, oval crushers, indicating strictly herbivorous habits, while most members of the family live upon animal food.

Lizards living in hot deserts must avoid overheating by being able to minimize heat loads and to dissipate heat efficiently; in contrast, those that live in colder places such as at high altitudes must be adept at acquiring and retaining heat.
During the early morning, when ambient temperatures are low, such a lizard locates itself in warmer microclimates of the environmental thermal mosaic (e.g., small depressions in the open or on tree trunks), basking in the sun with its body as perpendicular as possible to the sun's rays and thereby maximizing heat gained.
Lizards can enjoy the benefits of a high metabolic rate during relatively brief periods when conditions are appropriate for their activity and yet can still become inactive during adverse conditions.
