Basilisk II is an open source software emulator which emulates the 680x0-based Apple Macintosh computer on a variety of operating systems, including BeOS, Linux, AmigaOS, Windows NT, Mac OS X and even on the Sony PSP.
The last version of Mac OS that can be run within Basilisk II is Mac OS 8.1, the last 680x0-compatible version.
Newer Mac OS versions aren't compatible with Basilisk II because those newer versions require a PowerPC-based processor, which can't be emulated by the program.

Basilisk II is not free from bugs and artifacts, so HFS volume corruption may happen anytime.
However, for me, the most important benefit of Basilisk II is that this cool piece of software made possible to transfer data without loosing Mac-specific information across Linux/Mac/Windows, and use Claris Emailer with around 50,000 e-mail's in the archive under Linux.

Basilisk II In May of 1999, Developer Christian Bauer posted Basilisk II, an open source 68k Mac emulator for Windows 95/98/NT, BeOS, Amiga, and UNIX.
A second version called Basilisk II JIT is an "an attempt to add a dynamically recompiling 680x0 CPU core to the original Basilisk II." Basilisk II JIT runs Mac OS 8.1 and earlier on Linux on x86 hardware.
There is also a version of Basilisk II that runs on Mac OS X, making it a competitor to the Classic environment.

Basilisk II is a Mac emulator for Amiga, BeOS, Linux and Windows 9x/NT that has been released as "Open Source." In other words, it's freely available, and people have ported it to platforms other than that for which the author, Christian Bauer, originally wrote it.
Basilisk II for Windows supports the Internet, AppleTalk and other networking functions and is, as far as we know, currently the only Mac emulation solution for the PC that can do so.

 Getting Basilisk II-Linux Up and Running
When I set out to find out how to get Basilisk II running on Linux, I was like a fish out of water.
The reason that I chose to compile the source code instead of downloading the pre-formatted installer was that I ran into difficulties with the Basilisk II mouse later on down the road; after freshly compiling the source code, however, the mouse problems went away.
As Basilisk II is an on-going venture, the name may vary slightly from the name above.

I am trying to play EV on windows xp using basilisk II as an emulator, but whenever I try to open it, an error pops up saying "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\cdenable.sys" is missing.
Basilisk has been great for satisfying my Ambrosia-game-playing needs, playing all the 68K compatible ones comfortably (except for EV Nova, but then there's WinNova).

My understanding is that you cannot because Basilisk II is not a hardware-level emulator, but rather emulates the 680x0 CPU and supplies a fake NuBus card in order to hook into MacOS to provide disk emulation and other related services.
Basilisk II does not emulate enough of the hardware for AUX to run.
Basilisk II emulates the Macintosh by patching the ROM ToolBox and doesn't emulate hardware.

Basilisk II runs on several system environments including MacOS X. A Mac Quadra with 512 x 342 Pixels and 16.7 Mill.
These should not be compressed, not be write-protected and not mounted on the host OS (on Basilisk port for MacOS) while mounting in Basilisk.
If Basilisk shows a flashin' "X" within a symbol of a diskette, this means that no valid system can be found.

I've previously written about Basilisk II, an open source emulator that puts a 680x0 Mac in a window on a Windows (or other operating system) desktop (see Mac Emulation With Basilisk II, vMac and Basilisk II Puts a Mac on a Windows Computer).
A nice touch in Basilisk II is that it puts a "Unix" icon on the desktop, allowing easy transfer of files between the emulated Mac and its host system.
For now, with Basilisk II running happily on the Intel iMac, my teacher colleague is able to get the Classic support he needs - as long as he's prepared to use software that will run on vintage Mac hardware and operating system versions.

However, I found that with Basilisk II v0.9 running MacOS 7.5.x (and 8.1) creation dates are lost and then reset to January 1, 1904.
If you run Basilisk II as non-root, do not forget to set proper permissions for dev/sheep_net.
If you want to get JIT working, you have to recompile Basilisk II with "--enable-jit-compiler" and "--enable-jit-fpu" options, and then edit Basilisk II configuration file to explicitly enable JIT (or turn it on in preferences dialog).

To run Basilisk II, you need a ROM image, which is a data file containing a copy of the ROM chips from a real 68k Macintosh.
It is possible to use Basilisk II with a CD-ROM or floppy image, but because most bootable CDs have a minimal System Folder, it is better if you use a disk image with a more complete MacOS installed on it.
If Basilisk II is running MacOS 7.5.3 or newer, you can easily access some of the files from your OS X disks.

I was under the impression Basilisk was a Mac emulator, an Apple IIc is not a Mac and therefore it's ROMs would not work.
Yes, Basilisk II is a Macintosh emulator, not an Apple II emulator.
You may need to copy the full component of 19 segments to the 500 MB diskimage, so that they are accessible to the Basilisk environment as files (w/resource fork included).

The final alternative seems to be editing a file called "keycodes" and then entering its path in the relevant blank in the Basilisk II prefs box.
OK, I'm in luck -- the "right hand" codes match correctly to the descriptions in the keycode table, so "all" that I have to do is make note of what characters/functions result from which keypresses and from that I can tell what "left hand" codes are tied to which keys.
If you corrupt a Basilisk image so that it won't boot, the quick fix is to boot from a different one and mount the unhappy one as second drive.

The biggest current difference is that Mini vMac emulates the earliest Macs, while Basilisk II emulates later 680x0 Macs.
The fundamental technical difference is that Basilisk II doesn't emulate hardware, but patches the drivers in ROM, while Mini vMac emulates the hardware (with the exception of the floppy drive).
The consequences are that some of the earliest Mac software will run in Mini vMac and not Basilisk II, while much of the later software will run in Basilisk II and not Mini vMac.
