 The Geology of Ohio--The Precambrian
Alternatively, some geologists have suggested that the apparent rift basin may be a basin that was downwarped in front of the Grenville Mountains, a structure known as a foreland basin, or it may represent extensive, previously unknown sedimentary rocks that were deposited in conjunction with the igneous rocks of the Granite-Rhyolite Province.
These rifts, known as Keweenawan rifts and named for exposures of these rocks on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, may be continuous in the subsurface with the East Continent Rift Basin.
The East Continent Rift Basin is similar in configuration and age to an extensive arcuate system of rifts that extends from Nebraska and Iowa northward to the Lake Superior region and then southward into Michigan.

The Mars Orbital Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data showed that the basin is not flat but lower in the southwestern part.
Such a singular event could have led to the formation of mud volcanoes in the basin because of the expansive release of trapped volatiles from beneath and within the deposits.
If the plains deposit was initially flat or sloping up toward Syrtis Major Planum, the present topography could result from lithospheric sagging because of basin infilling and/or from tilting due to loading of a huge "mud ocean" deposit within Utopia Planitia.

OilTracers L.L.C. - Using Basin Modeling (Basin Modelling) to Reduce Petroleum Exploration Risk
Basin modeling (also spelled basin modelling) is the process of using either proprietary or commercially available software to assess charge risk by integrating diverse geological and engineering data types into a model of one or more petroleum systems active in an area being explored.
Which basin modeling software package is appropriate for a given project also depends on a variety of factors, including the project goals, the available data (geological and geochemical) for constructing the model, and the financial resources available for the project.
Basin models are constructed by integrating various types of geological and geochemical data (e.g., see Welte et al., 1997, for a review).

Chronostratigraphic data from five areas scattered from west to east across 600 km of the Western Interior Basin bracket the ages of this unconformity with precision that is based on isotopic ages, magnetozone boundaries, and ammonite range zones.
This pre-Lancian unconformity (U1) extends eastward from the Sevier overthrust belt in northwestern Wyoming to the southwest margin of the Williston cratonic basin in the tri-state area of Montana and the two Dakotas.
Deposition on top of this unconformable surface occurred 3.5 Myrs earlier in NW Wyoming than in SE Montana. The erosion represented by the unconformity migrated eastward with time, generally removing 2 Myrs of strata as it went.

Analyses of the rock's geology show it endured three giant impacts, before finally being hit so hard that it was catapulted into space.

The rock's composition also allowed scientists to pinpoint its place of origin - the Moon's Imbrium Basin.

 Jason B. Saleeby
The structural studies show that the intrusion was emplaced during a regional extension event which occurred over a broad region of southeast Alaska and which resulted in the development of a large sedimentary basin.
Shortly following the emplacement of the intrusion, the region underwent a major thrust faulting event which led to the closure of the basin, regional uplift and en masse transport of the intrusive complex along a basement-rooted thrust fault.
Dr. Saleeby teaches introductory and advanced geological field mapping, structural geology, physical geology, Cordilleran regional geology and tectonics, global mountain building and plate tectonics, application of petrogenetic and geochemical studies to regional and global tectonics.

Lithospheric deformation on the scale of Yellowstone's hotspot is associated with large-scale mantle processes generally have an observable response in river drainage systems.
An important factor not incorporated into previous estimates of Yellowstone plate motion is the effect of concomitant crustal extension associated with the Basin-Range extension of ~0.5 to 1 cm/yr.
The resulting deformation of the topography reveals the high topographic divides surrounding the SRP which separate the Snake River and the Salmon River drainages to the northwest and the Great Basin and ancestral Snake River drainages to the southeast.
