Basin Reserve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The swamp was drained and by 1866 the Basin Reserve became Wellington's official cricket ground.
One-day international cricket has also been played at the Basin: regularly until 1999, after which it moved to the larger crowd capacity Westpac Stadium on the other side of Wellington.
One of the incidental quirks of the Basin is that it acts as reputedly the largest traffic island in the southern hemisphere.

Forward-thinking citizens and government planners hatched the idea for a designated wildlife reserve in the 60s and 70s when much of the basin was open land or in agriculture and becoming surrounded by suburban growth.
With so much land being developed for urban and recreational uses, some saw it critical to reserve lands in the lowest flood-prone basin areas and "re-create" a natural habitat for birds and small animals with native vegetation where people would be welcome as visitors.
The resulting 225-acre Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve today is one of the finest refuges of its kind within a major urban area in the country.

The ACE Reserve, located south of Charleston, is drained by three major river systems: the Ashepoo, Combahee and South Edisto Rivers.
The heart of the reserve is a series of remote coastal islands in the lower basin which are accessible only by water.
Because of its relatively low level of disturbance, the ACE Basin has retained many of the attributes associated with estuaries at the turn of the century, and allows the opportunity to establish baseline criteria for undisturbed wetlands, as well as having a comparative basis for determining effects of long term development on nearby wetlands.

But generally, cricket is better than most at remembering, and the Basin Reserve is among the best at providing memories of the days of yore, and that is not merely due to the fact that it is the home of the New Zealand Cricket Museum.
Now the ground and all its glory is celebrated in The Basin, an illustrated history of the Basin Reserve, lovingly put together by the ground's champion Don Neely and writer Joseph Romanos.
It was interesting when studies were underway for the 1990s development of the Basin, as the main sporting venue in Wellington, that it was discovered the actual boundary of the ground was one lane out on the road that encircles the ground.

Wellington’s Basin Reserve is arguably the most famous sports ground in New Zealand.
The Basin, as it is affectionately known, has been one of New Zealand’s main international cricket venues for well over a century, and has hosted international rugby league, rugby union, soccer, hockey, athletics, boxing, Australian rules football and marching.
But Don’s experience of the Basin goes beyond cricket –; he played soccer on the ground as a schoolboy and has attended many of the famous moments in the Basin’s history.

This is one of the things you'd least expect to hear from such a staunch, loyal Wellingtonian as myself, but the Basin Reserve has become a serious handicap to playing and enjoying good cricket in New Zealand.
To me there's been all sorts of warning signals over the last five to six year that there were failures at the Basin and the strongest one in my mind was when I was still playing and we were set to play South Africa there in the last ODI of the 1998/99 summer.
It was a highly embarrassing situation that highlighted all the Basin's problems - the poor practice facilities, the pitiful covers that are about as much use as laying wet sheets on the ground.
