Baslow village is situated at the northern edge of Chatsworth Park in Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park, with which it has close links.
Baslow is divided into three distint areas, Over End, Nether End and Bridge End, where the river Derwent is spanned by a charming, 17th century, 3 arched bridge, beside which is a little stone shelter built for the toll collector.
Baslow is in a superb position, with magnificent views to be has from the nearby Baslow Edge, where the moorland is just a wilderness of heather and home of grouse.

Baslow is sited on the meandering River Derwent and just beyond the church lies a bridge of 1603, interesting for the fact that this is the only bridge crossing the river never to have been destroyed by floods.
At the edge of Baslow lies one of the geological features of the area, an isolated giant gritstone rock of around 6 metres high of which an old legend tells that local men had to climb this rock before they could be considered worthy of marriage!
Except for during the busy tourist season Baslow is mostly a tranquil place, as such it is ideal for a romantic weekend or to use as a base for discovering the stark beauty of the High Peak and its treasure trove of historic properties.

 Walk #587: A circular walk between Baslow and Grindleford
I had planned a 20-mile circular walk based on Baslow, but as I could not locate the map of the area to the north of Grindleford I was forced to limit myself to the area south of there.
The drive through the Peak District to Baslow was nice, and I was pleased to see that the mornings were getting lighter earlier; the only annoyance being the two pound fifty pence charge for all-day parking in the car park - an absolute rip-off.
Instead of turning left to walk northwards along Baslow Edge I walked eastwards for a short distance to Wellington's Monument, a simple cross on the southern edge of the moorland, with some fairly expansive views that were obscured by the sun, which was low in the sky at this time of the morning.

The north-eastern end (opposite end to where this photograph is taken) of the Bridge has a small stone built hut, which has been variously described as a toll booth and chapel, but in fact was built to provide shelter for the village "watchman", and was probably built at the same time as the bridge, 1609.
The lady in question was a beggar who would often sleep there after visiting one of her benefactors, Mr Edmund Hodgkinson of Baslow, who owned the flour mill.
Baslow New Bridge (called the "Devonshire Bridge") carrying the A619 between Chesterfield and Bakewell was built 1924-5.

On the northern edge of the Chatsworth estate, beside the A619/A623 junction, is BASLOW, an inconclusive little hamlet at its prettiest amongst the huddle of old stone houses that flank the River Derwent as it weaves its way south.
In its own grounds, the hall is picture-postcard perfect, a handsome Edwardian building made of local stone with matching gables and a dinky canopy over the front door.
The restaurant is superb and has won several awards for its imaginative cuisine; there's a less formal, less expensive café too.

The view over the Derwent Valley - behind you as you approach the monument and attain the huge gritstone boulder known as the Eagle Stone (the name is derived from the Saxon Aigle, a gaint who could hurl stones no other human being could raise from the ground).
