Large-scale housing and resort-style developments proposed for the Bass Coast near Inverloch may be blocked because of concerns over a lack of public consultation and their environmental effects.
The amendments to the Bass Coast Strategic Coastal Planning Framework were passed at a Bass Coast Shire Council meeting on February 16 by four votes to three in front of a packed public gallery of about 80 people.
Bass Coast Shire councillor Loretta Leslie, who voted against the amendments, said the late amendments had come as a shock to the community.

Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire Councils are member agencies of the South Coast Health Service Consortium (PCP).
Both Shires are now reviewing the report as part of their internal planning processes leading to the development of their individual Municipal Public Health Plans.

To allow all the environment, planning and Coastcare groups of the Bass Coast Shire the opportunity of getting together to exchange information and ideas and to learn new things, PICS has decided to revitalize the annual get-togethers that were held for some years until they lapsed last year.
Thanks to funding from the Department of Sustainability and Environment Dandenong region’s Coastcare Environment Education program we are able to hire the Newhaven hall, Bass Coast Shire is funding catering, whilst local State member Ken Smith’s office is providing photocopying free of charge to support the event.
PICS supported the Bass Coast Shire’s refusal to grant a permit for Helicopter Joy Flights from the property adjacent to Swan Lake.

Representatives from local community groups were invited to a meeting chaired by Jan Bourne, Community Development Officer for Bass Coast Shire Council (now Co-ordinator at Mitchell House Community Centre, Wonthaggi).

It should be noted that despite ongoing upgrading of the trail the surface is still best suited to bikes with wider tyres.
The trail is managed by the Bass Coast Shire Council.
As of 2006 they have organised the formation of a rail trail friends group and are seeking funding to upgrade the trail surface to be suitable for all bikes and motorised scooters and wheelchairs.
