Pale ales are actually amber, reddish-bronze or copper colored, "pale" in comparison to darker English beers such as brown ales, porters and stouts.
Burton is the home of Bass and Company, Britain's oldest commercial brewer, which holds Registered Trade Mark No. 1, the first trademark registered in England (and perhaps the world), issued July 25, 1890 for their Pale Ale label with a distinctive red triangle.
Pale ales have original gravities in the 1.045-1.055 range, final gravities of 1.009-1.013, alcohol by volume of 4.5%-5.5%, and bitterness of 20-30 IBU.
