Fender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the 'Broadcaster', 'Esquire' is a single pickup version); the first mass-produced electric bass guitar, the Precision Bass (or P-Bass); and the enormously popular Stratocaster guitar (or 'Strat' for short).
Other popular and/or notable Fender instruments include the Mustang, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Starcaster, Duosonic, and Bronco guitars; bass guitars such as the Jazz Bass, the 'Telecaster Bass' reissue of the original 1950s Precision Bass; a line of lap steels, and the Fender Rhodes electric piano.
Fender manufactures its highest quality models in the United States and Japan, but also has extensive manufacturing facilities in China and Mexico for downmarket models, such that a new guitar with the name, 'Fender Stratocaster,' can be purchased for roughly the same dollar amount today as in 1954.

tom lorenz: So many guitars, so little disposable income
Fender reissued the Bass VI in the 90's, so maybe finding a used one might be as economical as building my own.
Inside the issue was a big article on his custom guitars, the "Rare Bird" column featuring the Fender Bass VI, and all kinds of ads for all kinds of guitars, all of which completely fired my imagination.
And it was a sweet late 60's to early 70's sunburst Fender jazz bass.

Subject: Fender Bass VI & Bruce video bass To prevent some misimpressions it needs to be stated that the Fender Bass VI does *not* look Stratish.
Also, way back around #554 somebody posted asking about Morphine and also about a bass Jack Bruce was using in a video.
The Strat, Jag, and VI all have the same type pickups (unlike the Jazzmaster), but only the Strat's are canted in the body.

 Jack Bruce
In the early days of Cream, Jack played a Fender VI (6 string) bass whose narrow string spacing, and shorter than average scale-length, made it the ideal vehicle for a nimble-thinking and nimble-fingered innovator like Jack.
Jack's playing was clearly based on his classical training and he is reputed to have said that Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the greatest bass-lines ever.
His next bass was another short-scale model, but this time a more normal looking four-string - the Gibson EB3.

The inclusion of four live tracks, despite some thin recording quality that favors the bass well over the guitars on tracks like "Daughters and Sons," is a good touch.
