The upright bass was what bands had to work with for the first half of the twentieth century.
Guitarist Smiley Burnette, the bassist with Gene Autry’s band was one of the first players to use it, and it continues to be used by bassists playing salsa and Latin-jazz.
The electric bass allowed mobility and a virtuosity that was new to bass players, and a whole new school of bass guitarist began to evolve.

I recommend finding a couple bass players who have the style you'd like to have, and really immerse yourself in their work.
Granted, you can have a pretty drastic effect by altering the rhythm of what you're playing (e.g., playing a driving bass part really pushes the song along vs. playing a really laid back bass part), but you can have a tremendous effect on the overall tonality of the song, too.
I had a lot of fun playing bass for a while, and I certainly learned a lot and improved my ability to groove.

With slight tone control adjustments on my Keith Roscoe basses, I can get a big, fat country bass sound all the way to slapping and tapping, or the famous "Jaco" sound.
His new bass has the same wood as my Roscoe fretless and it plays like a dream.
Keith Roscoe said the diamondwood would last so long against those roundwounds that his son would probably be running the business by the time the fingerboard needs to be replaced.

i was playing bass with a female vocalist for a few months, learning all her (original) songs, working on getting the "music" happening (cuz she didn't put a lot into specifying the rhythm feels when she "wrote music", so there was a lot of freedom sometimes).
she loves the lyrics and completely has no idea what i'm talking about with what the bass and drums are doing to make it jump and i have no idea what the song is about or what the lyrics are.
He was a much better bass player than guitarist, but his ego was to big to stand at the back of the stage :), so he got a guitar and a fuzz box and turned it up a-la Pete Townsend.

John Entwistle, the quiet, efficient bass player who co-founded The Who and helped it become one of the most dynamic and successful rock bands in history, was found dead Thursday in his hotel room of an apparent heart attack.
Entwistle was on medication for a heart condition, according to Steve Luongo, the drummer in another Entwistle band for the last 15 years.
Yet, Entwistle was the only member of the 1960s group with formal music training, and he pioneered the use of bass guitar to play leads.

I've been playing for about 4 or 5 years now and to be really honest, I didn't practice much during the first coulpe of years, but now I've realised that I can't actually get any better unless I practice at least once a week.
A tip that I usually use: Keep your bass with you when you're sitting down somewhere (for example when you're on UKL or playing a PC game) and just mess about hitting different notes in different progressions and eventually you'll find something that sounds good.
I have a peavy bass....and a 100W bass amp made by....drat i've forgotten..it begins with T anyway....
