Figured bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Figured bass, or thoroughbass, is a kind of integer musical notation used to indicate intervals, chords, and nonchord tones, in relation to a bass note.
A part notated with figured bass consists of a bass-line notated with notes on a musical staff plus added numbers and accidentals beneath the staff to indicate at what intervals above the bass notes should be played, and therefore which inversions of which chords are to be played.
In turn, the separate bass line, with figures added above to indicate other chordal notes, shortly became "functional," as the sonorites became "harmonies," (see harmony and tonality), and music came to be seen in terms of a melody supported by chord progressions, rather than interlocking, equally important lines as in polyphony.

Double bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The double bass is the only modern descendant of the viola da gamba family of instruments, a family which originated in the 15th century and is used to provide the lowest pitch notes in an orchestra or band.
The double bass is erroneously considered to be the a member of the violin family of string instruments.
The double bass, unlike the rest of the violin family, still reflects influence and can be considered partly derived from the viol family of instruments, in particular the violone, the contrabass member of the viol family.

 Bass Harmonica 101
The Tombo Contra Bass is a single reed model, two octaves C to C, with both reed plates mounted on a single, convex-shaped comb, with a stainless tube covering the reed plates, giving it an oval-shaped cross section.
Bass reeds are tuned to equal temperament, in octaves, and since they are not subjected to"bends", or the kind of pressure seen by diatonics or chromatics, they are usually tuned to Concert 440.
An important point: attacks, articulation, range, etc, of the bass harmonica are quite limited compared with the upright bass or bass guitar, as it is a totally different animal in the bass family.

Guitar Lessons: Bass Guitar: Part 2 - The Role of the Bass Line
The goal is to introduce players to the basic elements of music; to explain why the bass plays a particular note at a particular time and the effect that bass lines have on a piece of music.
The job of the bass is to indicate which chord is being played at a given moment, and this is most easily achieved by playing the root note of the chord.
Sting is a master of very simple, very elegant bass lines that add a lot to the music he's playing, and every beginning bass player should listen to a lot of his music to hear how he does it.

When the chord changed, the bass line leapt from one root to the next, like so: (all notes are 8th notes) E A E A E G----------------------------------------------------- D----------------------------------------------------- A--------------0--0--0--0--------------0--0--0--0----- E--0--0--0--0--------------0--0--0--0--------------0-- The movement from one chord to the next is rather abrupt.
Although the Doors had no bass player (Ray Manzarek, the keyboard player, used a second keyboard to play the bass parts) for their last few albums a studio bassist was used, and I believe that this line was played on a bass, rather than on keyboards.
This matches the drummer's pattern: where the bass is playing the lower note, the drummer is playing the bass drum and where the bass is playing the higher note, the drummer is playing his snare.

 Constructing Walking Bass Lines
While the traditional three-octave range of the vibraphone doesn't always lend itself well to it, walking bass lines can be a very effective texture for unaccompanied and ensemble vibraphone performance alike; vibraphonists who double on marimba or mallet synthesizer have an even greater opportunity to use walking bass lines in their work.
While accomplished bassists will play bass lines using a variety of rhythms and a broad range of approaches to the harmony, elementary bass lines present the harmony of the song, and "walking bass lines" usually involve quarter-note motion.
Walking bass lines are a great study device when learning new songs, and they can also be a valuable part of a jazz mallet performer's repertoire.

The second skill is to use the scale form from each chord in a single position on the bass.
The bass line was written in 1st position using the appropriate Scale Forms.

 Line 6 Bass PodXT
The Bass PodXT has four independent effects sections in addition to compression (five if you count the new six-band EQ), for adding effects such as reverb, delay, sub-octave, auto-wah, synth, chorus/flange, and so on, as well as emulations of a number of classic stage and studio effects boxes.
The Bass PodXT's kidney-shaped case is the same as for its six-string counterpart, except for its dark-grey colour and the control legending, which reflects the different types of EQ and processing required by bass instruments.
The effects section organisation is a great improvement (even though it's serious overkill for most conventional bass playing), and for live use the addition of the bi-amped mode and compatibility with the Floorboard controller should eliminate the need for any further pedals, processors or crossovers.

Dolmetsch Online - Music Theory Online - Figured Bass
Even so, the accompanist was expected to observe the rhythmic and harmonic structure of the musical line and, for this reason, a form of 'harmonic shorthand' was developed that provided just enough information to extemporise an accompaniment but without making the part over-restrictive.
The main reason for showing it at all is that not only are the harmonies of the 'figured bass' realised but additional counterpoint is also added freely, a testament to what would have been expected from a keyboard player of the time.
When comparing Roman numeral notation with the fingured bass set out in an previous section of this lesson, notice that in the absence of Roman numerals, accidentals must be shown.

The Birth of a Bass Line
You might assume that a bass player and drummer performing the exact same rhythm or pattern would contribute to the strength of the groove.
In fact, you will find most often that when a drummer and bass player are competing for the same rhythmic space, the individual strength of each part diminishes, and neither part will stand out as much as if it was played alone.
The end result is often a bass line that is too complicated or busy, or ends up sounding out of place or contrived.

 Sonic Glossary: Basso Continuo
It is sometimes called "figured bass," "thoroughbass," or simply "continuo." The use of the basso continuo is confined, for the most part, to music of the Baroque era.
This musician generally performs on a cello or bass, but a viola da gamba, bassoon, or other bass melody instrument could also be used.
Basso continuo denotes musicians who thickened the textures in music of the Baroque era by augmenting the bass line with a combination of chord-producing and bass instruments.

Pianists usually make the best bass instructors because they do most of their work with the 'meat' of harmony and can really guide you in what needs to be done harmonically to make the structure of a tune work.
This also indicates that walking bass lines and eigth-note melody line are just two different, similar paths through a set of chord changes, where the melody lines wander more from the middle of the chord to upper harmony and bass lines tend to wander more from the root of the chord through middle harmony.
Many of them had full bass lines written out, and while some of them where a tad cheesy, many of them were quite good (Nestico charts spring to mind).

Less of a surprise is that it was “regarded as unseemly for the fair sex to blow things in public” (wind instruments) (56) but how the 500 double bass teachers in Paris in the mid–20s found work is a mystery (176), as is the necessity of 7593 keys to the Opéra (66).
And Nichols’ assertion, based primarily on Stravinsky’s rejection for a seat at the Institut in 1935, that he “stands as a signal exception to the rule of Parisian tolerance that marked the Twenties” is out of line even with Nichols’ own, relatively nuanced, interpretation of the period (263).
It is puzzling too that he has next to no engagement with the recent literature on nineteenth-century French music, such as Anselm Gerhard’s The Urbanization of Opera and James Johnson’s Listening in Paris, in which both institutional and reception history have played a major role.
