Oboe - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The oboe consists of a conical wooden tube, composed of three joints, upper, middle and bell, and of a short metal tube to which are bound by many turns of waxed silk the two thin pieces of cane that form the mouthpiece.
It was a third lower than the ordinary oboe, and was characterized by the pear-shaped bell with narrow aperture common to all wind instruments known as d'amour to which is due their veiled sweet quality.
In France it was used with the oboe in 1671 in Cambert's Pomona in the newly founded French Opera, for which Cambert and Perrin had received in 1669 a Royal Privilege expiring in 1672, and thereafter granted to Lully.

JNL 1: The Baroque Oboe--A Study
The Oboe in C, Oboe in B-flat, and Oboe basso in A are members of the true oboe family and are characterized by three part construction: bell, lower joint, and upper joint.
It should be noted that the oboes of the 18th and early 19th centuries were much more strident and piercing in sound than the modern instruments, a statement which is even more true of the still earlier instruments.
Modern reed-makers for the Baroque oboe must reckon with marginal intonation of the early oboe and carefully plan the range of variable to finally achieve both: tuning and the distinctive tone quality that is one of the essentials of historically correct performance.

 Oboes.htm
It is a little known fact that the oboe and bassoon developed as solo instruments preceding their now well-known soloist-virtuoso status of the High Baroque and Classical periods.
Since the tradition of ensemble structure according to instrument families was still alive, and the double-reed instrument families of oboe and bassoon are closely related, a new ensemble with two oboes, alto oboe, and bassoon arose from these two groups.
On the other hand, the oboe took on such a universal importance, that groups of musicians called themselves simply "hautboistenbanden" even though they played other instruments also, in order to show that they were available to play with the newly fashionable instrument, outdoors, in houses and churches on both solemn and gay occasions.

The oboe is both a family of instruments and a single instrument and member of the double reed group of woodwinds, which also includes bagpipes, baritone oboe, bassoon, contrabassoon, English horn in F, heckelphone, and oboe d’amore.
The oboe was developed from its predecessor, a one-piece instrument called the shawm, by Frenchmen Jean Hotteterre and Michel Philidor in the seventeenth century.
The oboe is cast as the duck in Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.

 Oboe History
It resembles the oboe in structure except that it is slightly longer and requires a bocal to secure the reed to the instrument.
The oboe’s distinguishing feature from other instruments (excluding those in its respective family) is the existence of a double reed: two flattened blades of bamboo that produce sound through the vibrations of one blade against the other.
The shawm, considered the predecessor of the modern oboe, was a popular instrument of this period, lending to the notion it had been growing in popularity through the silent medieval period.

Like the oboe, it is a double-reed instrument, although to facilitate the playing action (the instrument is normally held across and in front of the body) it is connected to the bassoon via a silver-plated, curved crook.
Occasionally, the piccolo (higher) or bass (lower) trumpets are heard (and the trumpet's 'popular' cousin, the cornet), although more common nowadays in 'authentic' Baroque orchestras (which use instruments of the correct period or copies thereof), is the 'natural' or valveless trumpet.
The tenor and bass trombone are occasionally seen (especially the latter), although the alto and double-bass are extreme rarities.
