Bass reflex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bass reflex is a type of loudspeaker enclosure that utilizes the sound from the rear side of the diaphragm to increase the efficiency of the system at low frequencies as compared to a typical closed box loudspeaker.
In contrast to closed box loudspeakers, which are substantially air tight, a bass reflex system has an opening called port or vent which consists of a pipe or duct of circular or rectangular cross section.
A poorly designed bass reflex system, generally one that is tuned too high, can ring at the tuning frequency and create an unpleasant booming one-note quality to the bass frequencies.

Most bass, especially large ones, are efficient and crafty; they prefer to ambush a helpless or careless creature rather than engage in a tiring high-speed chase of a terrified thing.
If a big bass is in a rare aggressive mood, the fast retrieve works better; but if this reckless attitude was common among big bass, there would be few of them swimming around, because most artificial-lure fishermen fish their lures with rapid retrieves.
Large bass clamp down so tightly on what they believe to be a crayfish, minnow, frog, or snake that it is difficult with a fly rod to overcome that bite grip enough to move the fly in their mouth and hook them.

Bass reflex enclosures, or ported enclosures, are some of the most frequently used in conjunction with low frequency drivers (along with sealed enclosures).
However, a ported (bass reflex) enclosure allows a portion of this sound energy to travel through a port and exit the enclosure thereby reinforcing the output from the front of the driver.
While bass reflex enclosures benefit from increased efficiency, however, they are not able to operate as precisely or as deeply as sealed enclosures.

Bass Reflex Loudspeakers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
This has the effect of projecting bass frequencies from the port in phase with the sound from the front of the cone, at least at the resonant frequency.
The overall effect is the increasing of bass efficiency and the extension of the bass response to lower frequencies.
A bass reflex enclosure can extend the bass response significantly below the loudspeaker resonance.

 Essay
Even though loudspeakers utilizing bass reflex techniques (i.e., ported or passive radiator designs) are quite common, or maybe even the norm if you carouse the average audio/video retailer.
The resonant character, in fact, has no effect on efficiency, which is determined by the strength of the motor and the mass of the cone, as well as the radiating area of that cone.
Because the Q values of the reflex system and the active driver determine the shape of their response, in order to change from a sealed to a ported design, or vice versa, the cabinet, driver, or both must change.

AudioVideo101.com - Audio/Video Dictionary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The port allows audio output generated from the back-side of a speaker driver to be used (as a speaker driver moves in and out to generate sound waves the front of the driver creates the primary sound energy heard, however, the unseen rear side of the speaker also moves air and produces sound waves).
While a ported bass reflex enclosure is more efficient and able to produce more bass output than a sealed enclosure, a ported enclosure generally does not have quite as high a level of articulation and detail.
Additionally, a sealed enclosure is able to play lower in the frequency spectrum compared to a ported or bass reflex enclosure (but not louder for a given input).

In a bass reflex or tuned port design, part of the back wave of the speaker is used to reinforce the front wave usually in the bass.
The increased output obtained in a bass reflex design can be used by the designer either to improve efficiency or to extend low frequency response.
An advantage of bass reflex design over acoustic suspension design is that the relatively higher efficiency of the former permits the same amount of bass to be produced with far less woofer travel or excursion.

A slight tendency to bass boom from the resonant cabinet limits the performance of the bass range: with a stiffer cabinet I'd have rated it excellent for the price.
The mid range is natural, just a little bit *behind* the bass and the highs, but still very enjoyable, even when reproducing difficult female voices.
In this case it is the slowness of the bass, nothing particularly relevant, especially considering the price, but still quite noticeable (one of the first things you hear when you compare the M2 to smaller, similarly priced loudspeakers, such as the Wharfedale Diamonds, for example).

BassLine SpeakerPanels are an alternative solution to acoustic problems
This was done to better capture the sound that is created off the back of the bass driver mounted in the cabinet.
Before Bass Reflex was created, all speaker cabinets were sealed units that only used the sound from the front of the bass driver.
The solution they came up with was to dampen or muffle out the low frequency distortion by applying an insulation to the inside walls of the cabinet.

Unlike an acoustic suspension speaker that uses a sealed enclosure, a bass reflex speaker includes a port (a hole in the box tuned to a specific frequency) or bass radiator (often referred to as a "drone cone") to produce more bass output in a tuned frequency range.
With a bass reflex design, efficiency is better - a bass reflex speaker will play louder than an acoustic suspension speaker when driven with the same amount of amplifier power.
This can be a big benefit, especially if you're using a low-powered receiver or amp.

 The Tech-T Glossary A-F
Bass Reflex cabinets use an opening, or port, in the speaker cabinet to enhance bass frequencies.
The idea is that the sound pressure generated by the back of the woofer (inside the cabinet) is routed out the port, where it is mixed with the sound coming from the front of the woofer.
Generally caused by overloading a low-frequency speaker, frequency doubling makes bass instruments sound an octave higher than they really are.
