Romanian leaders were trying to get back Bassarabia and Bucovina from the Soviet Union.
Bassarabia is present-day Moldova, a country of 4.3 million sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine.
It is not certain whether Antonescu himself intended the gypsies to be exterminated, but Gheorghe Alexianu, appointed by Antonescu as governor of Transnistria (a region in southern Bassarabia to which the Jews and gypsies were deported) was clerly guilty of genocide, historian Andrea Varga told IPS.

Moldova is a part of the area known as Bassarabia, geografically delineated by the Prut River on the west, the Nistru River on the north and east, the Black Sea on the southeast, and the Kiliya (Chilia) arm of the Danube delta on the south.
Bassarabia was among the territories assigned to the Soviet Union under the terms of the Secret Soviet German nonaggression pact of 1939.
The Soviet Union forced Romania to cede Bassarabia in June 1940, and, in August, assigned it to the Ukraine Moldovan ASSR to form a new Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic (MSSR).

Some people believe that Bassarabia and the Republic of Moldova are fairly the same thing but they are not.
Bassarabia was for almost 400 years a Turkish province and not part of the Moldovan principality at all.
That Bassarabia or Bugeac only belonged to a Romanian state (Moldova actually) from 1392-1484 and was part of Greater Romania from 1918-1940.

After graduating from the St. Petersburg construction college in 1850 Bernardazzi was appointed to Bassarabia as assistant architect.
He maintains that post for 22 years during which he creates a unique architectural ensemble that could easily compete with the most stately monuments of European architecture, combining elements of traditional architecture.

Following the Crimean War, in 1856, and Paris treaty of 1859, Russia lost the southern region of Bassarabia to Moldova, only to gain it back from Romania in 1878 at the Congress of Berlin.
In January 1918, following the collapse of tsarist Russian Empire, this region, comprised of part of the present territory of the Republic of Moldova and part of Ukraine, Bessarabia declared its independence from Russia when it was named the Democratic Republic of Moldova and reunited with Romania in March of 1918.
It includes the remainder of the present-day Bassarabia and Bukovina (the former Romania provinces) which was annexed by the USSR and part of it was combined with the MASSR, to form the MSSR.
