Abundance, habitat use and conservation of the olingo Bassaricyon sp.
We surveyed olingos (Bassaricyon sp., Carnivora, Procyonidae) in a seasonally-dry forest in four habitats along a 5 km trail, in the northern Brazilian Amazonia.
Olingos, which occurred at very high densities (approximately 11 groups, or 20 individuals/km2), were recorded in groups of up to six animals; they ate fruit (usually of Pradosia surinamensis), and appeared to be high-canopy dwellers.

 Bassaricyon
Olingos are small procyonids who comprise the genus Bassaricyon, native to the rainforests of Central and South America from Nicaragua to Peru.
They are arboreal and nocturnal, and live at elevations from sea level to 2,000 m.
The status of the various olingos is disputed: only the Bushy-tailed Olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii) is particularly well-known and the other species of olingos may prove to be only subspecies of it.

Five procyonid genera are currently recognized: Bassaricyon (five species); Bassariscus (two species; Jentinkia is now included with Bassariscus); Nasua (two species); Potos (one species) and Procyon (six species); all have a Nearctic or Neotropical distribution.
Young from the previous litter Can be kept with an adult pair until the onset of the next breeding cycle at which time they should be removed to eliminate the possibility of fighting and other interferences with reproduction.
Potos, Bassaricyon, some Procyon spp.) are not seasonal and must be monitored much more closely for evidence of pending parturition.
