The basset horn (q.v.) or tenor clarinet, which had reached the height of its popularity, no doubt suggested to Grenser, who was more especially renowned for his excellent fagottos, the possibility of providing for the clarinet a bass of its own.
Joseph Uhlmann of Vienna4 constructed a bass clarinet, also termed bass basset horn, with twenty-three keys and a compass from B1 through four complete octaves with all chromatic 2 See Victor Mahillon, Catalogue descriptif, vol.

BASSET HORN - LoveToKnow Article on BASSET HORN
The invention of the basset horn in 1770 is attributed to a clarinet maker of Passau, named Horn, whose name was given to the instrument; by a misnomer, the basset horn became known in Italy as corno di bassetlo, and in France as car de basset.
The tone of the basset horn is extremely reedy and rich, especially in the medium and low registers; the tone color is similar to that of the clarinet without its brilliancy; it is mellow and sensuous, but slightly sombre, and therefore well adapted for music of an elegiac funereal character.
The basset horn was the outcome of the desire, prevailing during the 16th and 17th centuries, to obtain complete families of instruments to play in concert.

 Mendelssohn Concertpieces
It was the fact that Carl Baermann played basset horn (as well as bass clarinet) in what is today the Munich Philharmonic but was then, the Munich Court Orchestra (and before that the Mannheim Orchestra) which was the catalyst for the two Mendelssohn Concertpieces for clarinet, basset horn, and piano heard on this recording.
Only the presence of some magnificent music that requires the instrument - the Mozart Requiem, for example - has sustained it for some two centuries, though recent technical improvements and its employment in significant compositions by Richard Strauss have caused a rebirth of the basset horn.
For a number of years, father Heinrich and son Carl played and toured together, performing many works written for and dedicated to the two of them, a pair of which, the Mendelssohn Concertpieces, are recorded here.

microtone - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about microtone
The Czech composer Alois Hába and Mexican Julián Carrillo composed in smaller divisions, and since 1984 Karlheinz Stockhausen has developed notations of up to 16ths of a tone for basset horn and flute, for example in Xi (1986) for basset horn.
Normally microtones belong in the domain of expressive pitch variation in acoustic music, being difficult to notate and perform precisely because most instruments other than the voice or violin family are designed to produce tempered pitches, or have fixed frets or keys.
When played against a drone, however, they become more clearly quantifiable as audible beat frequencies.

CONTINUO Magazine for Early Music April 1998 instrumental Reviews
There is no manuscript copy in Mozart’s hand, the only source being two editions published in the early 19th century by Breitkopf und Härtel and Simrock, scored for either two basset horns and bassoon, or two clarinets and bassoon.
Recently, an early 19th century manuscript of these pieces has turned up in the obviously original scoring for three basset horns, making it once again possible to hear the works as originally conceived for Mozart’s good friend and fellow Mason Anton Stadler.
As with so much of Mozart’s output, the five trios for basset horn KV 439b are shrouded in mystery.
