A bassist is a musician who plays a double bass or electric bass (also referred to as bass guitar).
Bassists play what is known as a bass line, which is a single monophonic line of music, which determines the key, chords and style of the song.
The bassist often plays the root of the chords, pedal tones or ostinatos and bass riffs.

Bass guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bassists trying to emulate the sound of a double bass will often pluck the strings with their thumb, and use their fingers to anchor their hand and partially mute the strings (partially muting the strings creates a short, "thumpy" tone for the notes which mimics the sound of an upright bass).
While the influential bassist Jaco Pastorius and many with him preferred to pluck them very close to the bridge for a bright and sharp sound, many prefer the rounder sound they get by plucking closer to the neck, mostly near the neck pickup.
Tony Levin, the bassist for King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, pioneered the use of wooden dowels affixed with velcro to the tips of the index and middle fingers and used to strike the strings of the bass.
