The $780 million Basslink project has moved a step closer to completion with the compulsory acquisition of properties vital to its construction, the Energy Minister, Theo Theophanous, announced today.
Lawyers, acting on behalf of a number of landowners, had requested that the land be compulsorily acquired as they considered the process offered better protection to their clients.
The project's proponent, Basslink Pty Ltd, together with building companies Siemens and Pirelli, were conducting a series of information days throughout Gippsland to explain the process for building the landmark project.

The transmission licence does not authorise Basslink to commence construction on the interconnector or to adopt a particular type of construction.
Basslink applied for a transmission licence in September 2000 to allow it to transmit electricity between Tasmania and Victoria over a high voltage direct current link.

The Basslink proponents are promoting the installation of a high voltage direct current electric power cable under Bass Strait to link the Tasmanian and Victorian power grids together.
Basslink have said that changes in the voltage gradients will require them to pay for cathodic protection for many steel structures on land and the impact on marine wharves, jetties, moorings, steel fishing vessels and pipelines etc. is also likely to be of concern.
Basslink claim it is economic factors and not environment protection critical to Tasmania that are driving their project agenda and on that basis the old technology cable would most likely suit their coffers very well.

Basslink shock for Hydro Tasmania - Business - Business - theage.com.au
THE opening of the Basslink power cable between Tasmania and Victoria this year is expected to cut Hydro Tasmania's annual profit for 2006-07 by $10 million, according to former chief executive Geoff Willis.
Hydro promoted Basslink as a way of enhancing its operations, by allowing it to import cheap Victorian power during off-peak times and saving its hydro power for high price peaks on the mainland.
The economics of Basslink moved against Hydro three years ago when concerns from owners of oil rigs in Bass Strait forced National Grid to install an earth cable on the line, which pushed the price up from $500 million to $780 million.

Basslink will also severely restrict market opportunities for new cogeneration projects to gain a toehold in the mainland market.
The public consultation process for Basslink must be totally transparent, devoid of "fudging" uncomfortable realities, and the Tasmanian Government should provide an equal amount of funding* for opponents to develop alternative scenarios to Basslink.
