 Sonic Glossary: Basso Continuo
So widespread was the use of the basso continuo that some people used to refer to the Baroque period as the "basso continuo era." Continuo groups are employed in vocal and instrumental ensembles ranging from three musicians to larger groups.
A basso continuo consisting of a solo harpsichord remained in use during the Classical era, however, to accompany recitatives in opera.
Basso continuo denotes musicians who thickened the textures in music of the Baroque era by augmenting the bass line with a combination of chord-producing and bass instruments.

The world's top basso continuo websites
Basso continuo is a type of accompaniment in western classical music particularly common in the Baroque period.
A basso continuo part is made by the performer by creating (or "realizing") an accompaniment from a composed bass part by improvising harmony above the written notes.
Basso continuo was employed most often in the baroque period (around 1600 - 1750), though continued to be used in many works in the classical period (up to around 1800).

Figured bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Figured bass is closely associated with basso continuo, an accompaniment used in almost all genres of music in the Baroque period.
Basso continuo parts, almost universal in the Baroque era (1600-1750), were, as the name implies, played continuously throughout a piece, providing the harmonic structure of the music.
Basso continuo, though an essential structural and identifying element of the Baroque period, continued to be used in many works, especially sacred choral works, of the classical period (up to around 1800).

 What is basso continuo?
Basso continuo (also "thoroughbass," "figured bass," "basse cifrée" (Fr.), "generalbass" (Ger.) or "continuo") is the practice of creating (called "realizing" by specialists) an accompaniment from a composed bass part by playing the bass notes and improvising harmony above them.
Continuo was standard practice in art music from roughly 1600 to the later 1700s.
Composers typically did not specify continuo instrumentation, but instruments commonly used included members of the lute family (the archlute and theorbo in particular), harp, guitar, instruments of the harpsichord and organ families, and even bowed-string instruments such as the lirone or viol.

Bach and the Baroque Style, Part 2
Another term for basso continuo is "figured bass." So this is a bass line with numbers under it that indicate what harmony should be filled in above the bass line.
The basso continuo always involved the keyboard because somebody had to be able to fill in the harmonies and with the extra figures, extra notes that you play at one time with your ten fingers.
Bach was a master of writing beautiful melodies with basso continuo, but he was also a great master … the greatest master of counterpoint.

It was also common to add a "16-foot basso" instruement, such as the double bass or double bass violone which would double the continuo part an octave lower (which is how the double bass got its name as it doubled the 'cello part but sounded an octave lower).
In that case, the basso continuo would be played, most likely by a 'cello and lute or small organ (harpsichords were not, I don't believe operatic instruments).
The harpsichord part is, most likely, simply a realisation of the basso continuo part so that you don't have to be able to read figured bass to play it.

 The Baroque Ideal
Baroque composers manifested their second ideal in the ubiquitous basso continuo, a fixture that perhaps yet more than Affekt was the essential characteristic of baroque style.
The score of a continuo part, known as figured bass, consisted of a bass line accompanied by numbers (figures) representing the remaining pitches of each chord.
The basso continuo idiom is, in many respects, analogous to a contemporary jazz lead sheet.

basso continuo: perhaps the most important characteristic of Baroque music.
Often shortened to continuo, the basso continuo was composed of a bass-register instrument that could play melodic lines (such as the bassoon or cello), and an instrument capable of playing chords (the organ in church music, the harpsichord or sometimes the lute in secular music).
Figured bass lines always appear in a part marked "continuo" or "basso continuo." The melodic bass instrument (bassoon, cello) play the pitches indicated by the composer, while the harmonic instrument (lute, organ, harpsichord) play the pitches indicated plus the chord structures indicated by the numbers.

It is short for “basso continuo” = “continuous bass”.
The actual instruments required are seldom clear beyond dispute, and the safest explanation is to define continuo as “At least one melodic bass instrument and/or at least one harmonic instrument.”
So if you are sequencing a Baroque piece with continuo, it is just permissible to dispense with a keyboard part, but so much more authentic and satisfying to include it.
