  Bast
In early times Bast (written as 'Bastet' by scribes in later times to emphasize that the 't' was to be pronounced) was a goddess with the head of a lion or a desert sand-cat and was regarded as mother of Mahes, a lion-headed god.
Bast is shown in one depiction as wearing the Double Crown (the red and the white "nested" together) and suckling the Pharaoh - perhaps an allusion to the rise of popularity with Per-Bast or Bubastis, the Domain of Bast.
Bast is often shown holding the ankh or the papyrus wand, and sometimes the was-scepter (usually only in connection to Bubastis, which was the home of Her cult - in the delta region, where a necropolis has been found containing mummified cats.

Greene Natural Fibers - Kenaf Bast Fibers   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Kenaf bast fiber falls roughly mid-way in the bast fiber spectrum, which includes flax, hemp, jute, sunn hemp, ramie, roselle, abaca, musa and a number of other lesser fibers derived from the phloem, or outer bark, of tall plants.
While there is general agreement that flax is the best of the bast fibers, proponents of ramie might disagree, and those of jute, hemp, kenaf and roselle could each cite arguments for their fiber being the next best.
Capable of delivering two times the bast fiber tonnage of hemp, jute, roselle and sunn hemp, and three times that of flax – kenaf bast fibers are not only good, they are also relatively inexpensive.

The Ecclasian Fellowship - Articles - Bast: the Cat Goddess
In early times, Bast was often seen as a beautiful girl with the head of a lion, which was a sign of her war-like nature (she was sometimes listed as one of Ra's avenging deities who punish the sinful and the enemies of Egypt).
Bast was considered to be mother of Nefertem (as was another Egyptian goddess by the name of Sekhmet), who was a god of perfumes and alchemy.
Bast and Sekhmet are an example of Egyptian duality: Bast was a goddess of Lower Egypt and sekhmet of Upper Egypt, Bast represented the beneficent power of the Sun and Sekhmet personified it's destructive power.

 Bastet Ancient Egyptian Cat Goddess
The word Bast is made up of the word "bas" and the Egyptian suffix "-t", and is pronounced "baohst" in the sense that there is a long "a" which has a bit of an o-sound to it.
Again, there are those who consider Sekhmet and Bast to be one and the same Deity with Bast representing the more domesticated aspect of the cat family, while others do not see Bast as an entity in her own right at all, but as the personalized anima (female aspect) of Horus.
Bast expressed the qualities of the lion or cat family, beauty of movement, agility, strength, caution, fidelity to the pride, etc., all of which could equally be interpreted at the spiritual level.
